Dogs and puppies
Darren, I suggest that if you go ahead and get a dog, get a small dog, if you intend to leave it for long periods on its own. Get one that can't reach work surfaces and doesn't have huge gnashers to cause untold damage by chewing!
Alternatively, as suggested before, get a rescue dog, that is hopefully past the destructive, chewing stage. Straightaway, start leaving it on it's own for an hour or so and gradually work up to longer periods.
Sometimes, we can leave our 16 month old GSD bitch for up to 7-8 hours on her own and she is fine [destroys nothing]. Another time, we can leave her for an hour or so and its like a bombsite when we return
the total cost of damage she has done so far is over the £1k mark now.
We have got round this by leaving her in the Utility with access to a fenced off part of the garden about 20' x 12'

LOL I remember when my parents got our Labrador, when he was left in the house one day while they went shopping he ripped up an entire lino covered floor and chewed all the units in the utility room
He was not very popular with my dad for quite some time

Thanks for the offer Merv. We got a 8 month old lab in the end called Elle.

I do like springer spaniels though, they are crazy little buggers, I have a mate who has one

He looks wicked. I really wanted a puppy but a puppy would be to much for my girlfriend to look after as she is off work with ME
We wanted a dog that would be a good companion and be easy to look after. That's a lab alright.
