PML....

Let's have the plasma cutter after you, i'm having trouble getting parts into my engine bay...
bebeu,
I think Janpeed have started doing one, you might want to read Bob's thread.
The GT30R is calling for a fair amount of custom work, have you any idea how big they are...
Cheers

Hi All, bit of an up-date on what's been going on with the Scooby lately.
Well as I said before the 2.5 short block arrived from the US and I finally decided on a GT30R and TiAl 40mm wastgate which came from Mark @ Lateral. The turbo and wastgate are with my spare engine at the exhaust chap's place right now having the twin scroll manifold modified to mount the GT and stand alone wastgate. Turbo is being mounted in front of the engine (lovely short runners) manifold is stock twin scroll 4 - 2 then a new piece making it 2 - 1 which then "Y's" to supply the turbo and the wastgate. The pix will make this clearer but don't have any yet
The 2lt is now out of the car and all stripped down, JDM STi heads are nice, larger ports than UK STi heads too (only a couple of mm though) and slightly different inlet port splitter design. No cracks found, which is nice
and have started a very gentle porting with them - just a clean up really, then we'll lap the valves and then start loosing sleep on if i'm going to change the cams and loose the AVCS or not...
So when the spare engine comes back from the exhaust chap we'll have to mount it in the car and get the rest of the exhaust plumbing sorted out, I plan on a simple 4" straight pipe exiting in front of the front (drivers side) wheel plus a "MOT use system" which will be some 3" (with sport cat) that will marry up with the existing 3" system already in place.
2.5lt has been waiting for me to pull it apart, that'll start tomorrow, then I can chuck all the bits off to be balanced, i've decided to run the stock bits first just to see what the stock bottom end is capable of (changing the bearings to tri metal type though) when it goes pop I'll build the other one up with all the stronger bits, plus it gives me time to organise the dosh for a proper crank...
FMIC is all dimensioned up and the core will be ordered from Spearco later this week (just to make sure I don't change my mind again...), I may have to just plumb the GT into the stock STi TMIC in order to start running the thing in, depends how it goes, sometimes the US end is mega fast other times they take forever...
Inlet manifold is also being fabricated to my design, i've decided on a Jun style one but won't say more than that until it's on the car, I think it will turn out to be a PITA
Jury is still out on the fuel system (fuel generaly actually) but the two Nos systems are all together now and ready to go on
Hay ho
Cheers

Turbo is mounted in front of the drivers side head, turbine shaft is at 90 deg to the crank and horizontal. It's roughly half way up, between the two cams.
as for getting too much money...no, just really carefull shopping!

Good stuff!
Where does the water rad go - I guess the standard one would foul the turbo?
Will you need to change to NA crossmember to get the exhaust under?
Did you consider keeping it twin-scroll - maybe a GT37?

have stripped the 2.5 down, it's all a bit basic, starting to re-consider using it now!
Custom rad will still fit in the front or will use another location
Exhaust will fit under if oval or change the crossmemeber to the NA one as you say
Thought about twin scroll but wanted to use a T3 style housing so I had / have a wider range to choose from

Hi guys, im soon gona have a thread under projects with my project (duh obviously) and one thing i always wondered was if you could fit a version 8 dashboard to a pre facelift MY96. So i see i get the answer but how easy is it to fit in. Would i need some extra bits n bobs for the dashboard to work properly i.e. dials and displays. Please do let me know.
Also i am looking for an engine for my project and am wanting to know what would be a better option, a Sti version 4 or a Sti version 3 engine. Btw im after big performance as well as a strong engine

Well I posted a fair amount about fitting it so you tell me
personaly i think it's a total pain...
ver 3 or ver 4, if your after big power it will all need messing with anyway?
Cheers

Little up-date: -
Got the 2.5 bottom end and clutch assembly all balenced now plus a little light porting on the heads (just a clean up really) Now I'm just waiting for the inlet manifold to be done and the other intercooler to show up so I can get that all fabb'd up.
Got bored driving the diesel about so have got another import WRX to tool around in while the "proper" car is off the road though I may have to make a few little changes to it
Will get piccies organised soon
Cheers

Hi All
Bit of a delay since my last post
so what happening with the damn thing? Well I pulled the engine because it would only do 12.8 1/4 on 2.2bar (absolute) and I did not see the point in tuning the nuts off it for a few more tenths when I wanted / need a couple of seconds...!
So out came the engine and in went the order for a 2.5lt, Garrett GT30R and wastgate etc etc. So what's the current deal? Well I have pretty much everything in one place now, all the bottom end is balanced, new (better quality) bearings are here, just waiting for one of the guys to machine a little head mod for me then it's time for a big clean up and build up the heads. When they are together (hopefully this time next week) I'll plasigauge assemble / disassemble check the bottom end, assuming that's all ok then I'll re-assemble again and sort out the deck heights (which are a little off) and the bore sizes which are a little tight. So it's get all that sorted and get the damn thing together and back in the car!
Exhaust manifold is done as is the new intake system (think Jun style with two throttle bodies) intercooler is here just need a little Tig work to get that to fit properly then it's complete the plumbing fire it up and hope the heads stay on... I've decided to use std stretch bolts with copper gaskets and fire rings so we'll see. I won't be running huge boost in the mid range but it will get serious abuse (boost plus N2O) between 6 and 8k in order to get the 1/4 times I want so we'll see!
Inside the dash and door cards are out again so I can work on the wiring, all the airbag wire is now out and the door stuff (windows etc) all works which is good. Still can't make my mind up about running the ABS but if I don't I'll need to adjust the brake balance as it's too rearwards biased at present. I have also acquired a lovely group A cage (thank you eBay) that's going in at some stage and in a fit of retail therapy I've bought some Defi BF amber gauges (that match the dash IP lovely) so I need to find a place for them too.
That's about it really apart from having 5m's of 100mm diameter ally tube because they would not sell me an off-cut
anyone want to buy a swirl pot?
Cheers
