Default GC8 Twin scroll

Hi all

I've never started a thread before but I've been reading about all the projects so thought "why not" I hope you don't all die of terminal boredom reading about mine. The goal is (and has always been) to to do a "10" 1/4 and run 200mph like Jun. Anyway, this is the current situation

Done: -
92 JDM WRX shell, doors and glass
2002 UK 6MT
2003 JDM -
- 2.0lt twin scroll engine
- DCCD-A centre diff
- 3.90 rear diff with plate LSD
- STi Brembo's (front and rear)
- STi Master cylinder and EBD ABS
- Full 2003 JDM loom
- Dash, heater and climate control
- Subframes, steering and suspension links
2004 Spec C fuel tank, up-rated fuel pump, some std and some fabricated fuel system
Std ECU - Tuning by me
Ohlins Dampers, P1 Springs
P1 front and rear aero parts, 00MY front bumper
2002 STi 17" wheels & tyres
PFF7 8x18 225/40/18 wheels and tyres
1 seat

In progress: -
Making the 2003 dash fit 100% perfect
Fabricated intake
Relocated header tank
Water injection
High pressure intercooler spray
3 port solenoid
2 port actuator
76mm exhaust

Future: -
Morette headlight conversion, Intake through inner right hand light hole
Front mount
Roll cage
"Different" body panels
Paint
Carpet and trim
Two seats

I'll try and organise some pix over the weekend so you can see what a state it is...

Cheers

Simon

Simon,

Should be a good thread.

Are you gonna try and achieve those figures with the block remaining standard?

Damian.

ummm block, yes well I have some other plans for the block, I have a 2.5lt sitting in LA along with a set of Pauter rods and Ross pistons. I figure I'll have some fun on the 2.0lt then pop the 2.5 bottom end in.

Cheers

Simon

Good luck Simon, having done that speed (non scoob) it will be interesting to see what the Impreza is like up there My rear windows would pop on the Spec C at 160mph+

This should be a very interesting thread

Out of interest Simon do you intend to keep the standard ecu for the project? And is this the 1992 (i.e pre97) or the 2004 spec C type ecu?

Tony.

Without wanting to steal Simon's thunder Tony, I'd guess it'd have to be a 2003/2004MY ECU. '92 one wouldn't have the AVCS, DCCD-A and other acronyms necessary to run the modern engine.

Simon, are you planning on keeping the production gearbox internals in your big power project, or is an uprate on the cards?

That’s the one, thanks for the reminder Carlos

Hi Ian, I have done 169.8mph (sat nav verified) in a P1 and it was kind of loud but apart from that really no drama at all, the P1 aero is really good, you could quite literally take your hands off the wheel at that speed. The 03MY in contrast demands both hands all the way up to and past 155

ECU, loom, its all 03 / 04, even have the 03 / 04 dash in there

Box is currently EU / UK 6MT ratios with the JDM 1:1 drop gears, DCCD-A and 3.90 rear plate LSD diff. The EU / UK 6th gives 24.5mph per 1000 rpm with 225/40/18's so easily capable of 200

Been doing the engine breathers, air intake and header tank tonight, breathers all sorted now just need to mount the breather tank somewhere, header tank is now re-located to the right hand side (looking in the bay) next to the engine bay power box. Bloody intake is crap though (can I say that on here?) I started with a silicone 76 – 51 reducer on the turbo, but it hits the manifold, then when you put the 76mm pipe into it forces everything out of shape. Rubbish. Start again on that one!

Cheers

Simon

My MY95 RA was clocked at a genuine (not speedo) 174.7 at TOTB2, no window problems but it did feel a bit light and a tad unstable when I lifted off. I think the deep front spoiler would be a must for anything faster, along with a bit less camber and a bit more toe in all round.

Did your car have guards around the top or the windows Andy?

I thought T-uk had blown up my beloved turbo the other day but he had just blown out the rear left window seal with his exuberance

Yes John, it had those tacky plastic windshield things didn't think they would need aerodynamic aids in Japan , what with the 112mph limiters !!

Problems Si?

Hey, if you're banging your head against a brick wall, put the loom down for a bit and take some photos!

I dunno. 2003/4 JDM engine, turbo and electronics, no time or expense spared....

...and you stick with the original horn....?!

May as well fit one of those handle operated klaxons, it'd be louder, and better sounding!

lmao @ greasemonkey well in defence of the OE horn, at least its light….

03/04MY dash is a major PITA, it’s still not 100% but it’s starting to get there now. One of the first things you realise is that you need to use ALL the 03/04MY stuff to do it, trying to “mix and match” is a non starter.

The HVAC system (all the crap under the dash that makes it go hot or cold) that mine came with consists of 3 main elements: - 1, Fan box. 2, Heater box. And 3, Air-con box. The 03/04MY has only two boxes, one with the fan in the other (huge one) with the heater and air-con rads. The first hurdle was does the fan box match the hole in the body, fortunately it does and this was kind of what kicked the whole thing off as a “go-err”

Next you need to make the bloody huge heater, air-con and air distribution box thingy fit. This goes on the tunnel (note, the loom goes over the top, NOT underneath as I first had it) you then need to cut a new hole in the bulkhead to take the heater and air-con hoses, try not to make it the size of a garage door like I did… You can then trial fit the crossbeam, it will fix to the lower two holes on the centre tunnel (Thank you FHI) but it’s completely different at each end, you will need to make some new holes in it to take the studs at the drivers end and fabricate a mount at the passenger end (still on “to do” list)

Then you can slot the dash neatly over the crossbeam and onto the big heater box and realise that it’s about the right width (circa 5mm narrow each end) but it won’t sit back properly. This is where you either get to take a 4” disc cutter to your nice new dash or to your nice (old) car… I chose the dash and carefully removed the 3 projections that were stopping it going back, it will then sit in lovely

aaaaa writing it down makes 3 ½ days of heartache and stress seem like a distant memory! Once you get to this stage you realise it goes in and looks half way decent you have earned yourself a cup of tea / cup of coffee / large spliff (delete as appropriate, I chose the tea but don’t let that stop you choosing the coffee…)

All that’s left then is a day or so of fitting, removing, trimming, re-fitting to make it sit right, you can then fit the 03/04MY brake and clutch pedal’s (forgot, you need to cut the original mount slightly so they go on properly) and bolt the brake pedal assembly to the crossbeam, this may need a couple of washers to space it right, otherwise the crossbeam goes wonky and the dash then looks ****e.

What a palaver!!! Still it does look quite nice now and the 03/04MY IP (Instrument pack) is a very cool thing (that will not fit in the “old” dash without major cutting of the crossbeam)

So this weekend I did a bit on the dash, bled the brakes and clutch, sorted the engine breathers (now need a catch can) re-located the header tank (now need a bracket) and sorted the wiring for the lights, rad fans, turn signals, horn and ABS senders. Oh and decided were the PAS reservoir and ABS pump will reside. Umm, yea, also pulled and re-fitted the inlet manifold, to take the steel pipe off that connects the OE head breathers and the other one that supplies water from the header tank when it's bolted to the manifold, it's now (or soon will be) mounted to the right hand turret next to the engine bay fuse box water More bits to buy…!

Cheers

Simon

This is shaping up to be an really interesting thread.

It's great to see that you have the enthusiasm to tackle something like this a hobby on top of the all crap you must take at work. If someone asked me to develop an electronic trading system in my spare time I think I'd kill them

Well done,
Andrew...

Y'know Nath, I was gonna come out with some comment earlier about how he spent all that time farting around with the dash, but didn't take any pix...

You know what they say Simon, a picture is worth a thousand words!
