Rattling Leda's?
#33
chaps,
I hope I'm not tempting fate, but the rattle seems to have gone forever !
I've dome about 600 miles now and it is still silent. The chaps at Leda do really seem to have this 100% sorted.
AT LAST.

Aloooooooooha Guys...
Don't think that you guys have all the fun(rattles)..I just put on the LEDA Tarmac Sytem and I have the same problems..from the rear..
I am using STi rear mounts and camberplates up front...One of my friends(thats a suspension expert for a road racing team) says the the coil spring it self is the cause of noise...the coil spring binds up with the top hat to make the metal to metal sound..even tho you wrench the heck out of them...The cure...wrap the first coil in teflon tape(it sorta lubricates it) or spray some teflon spray on the spring/tophat...also on the adjustment collars also...helps out alot...not totally inclusive..but a start...

Oh one other thing..How much does the new valving system cost to incorporate....the only problem..Mine are brand new and they don't need the rebuild yet....

Drove up to Leda yesterday - managed not to get lost this time! Did however manage to get caught in a speed trap in one of the lanes going into Braintree - 40 limit (why not NSL?), me doing 45ish but 'accelerating' - let off with a caution (phew!)
At Leda I had all the dampers rebuilt, springs changed, ride-height set and then went out for a test drive around the block with Dave Lyon on board. Result: somewhat quieter, but we could both still hear some rattling from the rear which warranted further investigation.
Back at the factory, much bouncing of the car up and down, and a lot of head-scratching took place. The noise was not due to the internal Leda valving (no tapping could be felt at the top of the strut mounts). It was louder around the wheel centres, but it was impossible to tell exactly where it was coming from without being able to get properly under the car to check. It wasn't ARB bushes, exhaust etc...
Anyway, full marks to Leda for effort - Off came the rear dampers again, and Dave had them re-built with an extra teflon 'insert' which he thought might help to reduce noise transmission up the strut.
Another test drive around the block and the tapping noise was almost gone. I guess I can live with that if I have to, although I would still like to find out exactly what *is* causing it. The dampers themselves are now *quiet*.
Just for the record, I now have the following settings:
Springs: 250 front, 200 rear (was 300/225)
Dampers: 6 front, 4 rear
With the softer suspension, the car is now a real pleasure to drive on our (crumbling) West Sussex roads. I don't know how 275 lb springs would have felt as Leda did not have any in stock, so they fitted 250's instead (despite previously saying they would be prone to bunching!). There is obviously a bit more body roll, and a bit less point and squirt with the softer suspension, but for everyday driving which is 100% of what I do (no track days so far), it's far less cringe-making than before. I can now carry passengers without having to apologise for the hard ride!
Thank you Leda, and I just hope the rattle doesn't come back... fingers crossed.
Cheers,
Jeremy

Willo,
In response to your email and for the benefit of everyone else, I have done approx 2500 miles since the recent cure to the rattle. It is still quiet, I do believe that the problem is now 100% sorted.

I had Leda B installed on my Impreza in January. No problems with the rear however the front had the same rattle that everyone has been talking about. The mechanics checked and nothing was lose however they said that thee was a slight ammount of 'play' at the top where the shock was mounted to the car inself. They put a thin washer one each and voila no noise at all....I'm still trying to find the best settings to put the suspension on especially for bumpy city roads....Other than than the ride is fine.
