Bob, is there any chance you could take a whole frontal shot of the car, standing back outside please?

Thanks

Still thinking about fitting the nearside trim as well and then crafting mesh/trim ring's to fit both for symetry.

certainly makes people look.

Thumbs up

Bob thanks very much.

Looks a bit lop-sided at the moment, would definitely look very aggresive with both sides done and meshed out.

Almost makes it look like a WRX Lol, if some poor bar-steward mistook that for a WRX with an STi spoiler, doesn't bear thinking about

I could be very tempted if I can get some mesh the same as the WR1 grilles I have.

Lol, was Mark finding out how quick our cars are so he knows what he has to do to beat them

Cheers Bob

Nice to finally meet you.

Very impressed with the map. Took the car on the A21 tonight (Nathan put your fingers in your ears) and did a little circuit (with a full tank of fuel) Gobsmacked with the way it pulls to 120mph.

Should be able to give those TVRs a better run for their money.

I can't hear what your saying "tra la la la la"

Jon told me he's taking your car away for a little tweak soon

So how much power are you running now and expected? PM if you prefer.

Nathan

Stage 1- Standard WRX internals with FMIC,440's TD05 and Gruppe-s headers and water injection I would hope for 300bhp. Only worry is it's still running hot at about 94-100oC when using 70-100% throttle.

Stage 2- Axis stage 3 US STi engine with STi heads, TD05 20g and all the above. I would hope for >400bhp once mapped on the link by Bob.

I also have carbon fibre boot, STi ver 5 spoiler and bonnet to be fitted before next race.

Hopefully the suretrac in the six speed might help the front end slightly.

Comments welcome

You are obsessed by beating that TVR!
I will be very interested to see how you get on sprinting that 6 speed. Does it have a DCCD, and is it a JDM Sti unit (thinking ratio's).
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the 5 speed i have as i real need to get some serious tyres (probably soft spec Kumho V70).

Graham

Its a low mileage JDM STi 6 speed and I think its non DCCD, but with the suretrac. The ratios should suit sprinting but I might be changing gear a few more times.

Nathan agree its very lopsided, wanted to make sure it was worth doing first ... and it is, so now need to fit the other side and tart it up a bit, finding something to make the trims from is going to be the main issue.

If you place the mesh you chose over the end of a steel pipe you can tap it down into the shape of a lens. Would look almost O.E then.

Latest tit bit ... fuel pressure.

For some time I've been trying to get hold of a Defi pressure sensor to plumb in and connect to my PSi3 unit to monitor fuel pressure, finally RCM stepped into the breach and its installed and working, I knew my pump was getting tired as I have progressively been having to adjust the injector scaling to compensate, so when I was able to check pressure it was no suprise to find it a bit lacking above 5700 rpm.

These cars (STi9 or MY03 JDM STi) run 3.3 bar pressure above boost/vac, not 3 bar as the GC8's, car idled at 2.5 bar hot and followed the 3.3 bar offset all the way provided boost was held at 1.2 bar, onec allowed beyond it followed to 5700 then fell back by 0.6 bar at the redline, car was mapped for it and fueling had stayed consistent once done.

So fitted a Walbro, word of warning bin the Walbro fuel filter supplied and re-use the oem one, not only does the Walbro filter face the wrong way and would cause fuel surge but its only 25% of the size of the oem ... bad news.

Now idle pressure is 2.7 bar, however pressure still follows the 3.3 bar off set in all respects but holds up at 4.8 bar at high revs. At this pressure though it is delivering more fuel, remap needed to restore injector scaling, actually ended up setting them as "bigger" than std. Fuel map needed adjusting above 0.5 bar load line by some margin. So zero boost is 3.3 bar fuel pressure.

Interesting to see that the fuel regulator on this car is NOT overpowered by the pump and therefore its NOT necessary to fit an adjustable fuel pressure reg at all.

Pump install and fit all straightforward and no different to previous models, fuel pump cradle has a neat centre steady clamp now though andf some forming of the feed pipe is necessary as the pump comes with its outlet on the opposite side to the oem.

Didn't have time for pics I'm afraid as was done late last night, only took 90 mins all told including removal and refit of rear seats and rear water spray tank.

I monitored fuel pressure in a Eurospec STi about 2 years ago, even with standard boost (car only had a aftermarket exhaust system) I saw a fuel pressure drop of about 0.4 bar (0.4 bar from offset) at 6000 RPM+ with standard pump. After fitting a Walbro (using also the standard fuel filter on the pump) fuel pressure was rock solid, even after running about 0.3 bar more boost at top end. I did this test because I was concerned that the Fuel Pump Controller could be overpowered by the massive amount of current the Walbro draws. This is definatly not the case, as I fitted more than 50 of these pumps in the new age WRX without any problem.

Pump install and fit all straightforward and no different to previous models, fuel pump cradle has a neat centre steady clamp now though andf some forming of the feed pipe is necessary as the pump comes with its outlet on the opposite side to the oem.
The GSS342 has the outlet 180° turned and will fit without mods! I think you have used a GSS341. What you said the GSS341 will also fit without any problem after bending a bit the piping, though.

This is an excellent thread. Great reading. One question if you don't mind. Does anyone know what fuel pump is used with the PPP kit. Is it the Walbro or some other ? If its not, is it worth changing to the Walbro ?

I'm not recommending any pump here Carlos just advising the findings, I had the Walbro one the shelf, once I have something else then I will fit it, I have seen four "failures" of Walbro pumps in the last 5 months, having a fuel gauge means I can keep it in sight. let me know if your Walmart one is better !! ... lol.

mark yes a 341 it is.

Note there are no CEL protests from the fuel pump controller, pump can be heard in the cabin though.

Bob, have seen only 2 'Walmart' pumps fail out of at least 20 I have installed, but the
price of them is very good when compared to other brands.

Is it not false economy to fit "cheap" fuel pumps with a 10% failure rate when the results could be serious engine damage if it runs lean?

Thanks for any info.

Hi, this is my first post on scoobynet. I currently have an entire JDM v.8 STI drivetrain that I swapped into my 02 USDM WRX.

I had a few questions regarding the engine, I have noticed you guys have a lot more info then the yanks, luckily im a canuk.

Anyways, I've been trying to find a downpipe/exhaust that will work with the VF37 that I have. I was wondering if you knew where I could find the exhaust for our setups.

Also, since the swap, the car has rough cold starts. For about 5-10min the car runs rough(hesitant), then when engine temps are up the car comes to life and is really responsive. Is this normal? If not what could be wrong?

In regards to the above comment, when I searched around about the wiring of the engine, I was left with a wire that nobody could explain. There are two wires (red/green) right below the throttle body, and I was told they are only for the Spec-C and that I shouldn't have them, and I know I don't have a Spec-C, since I ran the numbers and checked the turbo etc.

I was told that the wires were the intake temp sensor and that the car will run fine without it. But I feel this is what is causing the rough cold start. What are your thoughts? Were they wrong?

After reading this thread, I really look forward to modding this engine, the potential is unreal .

Thanks for any help,
-John

I have a Zero Sports downpipe on my VF37 - very good downpipe, no CEL problems whatsoever. See http://www.zerosports.co.jp/index.html and click on the GDB C link in the IMPREZA new parts section.

You can fit any US WRX catback exhaust system, however you will need to either extend the pipe by around 10cm or make up a separate delete pipe as the Zero Sports downpipe is designed to mate to the catless catback JDM exhaust (USDM has an extra cat).

I currently have an MRT catback matched to the stock JDM downpipe. Im throwing one cell at the moment, but because of this being the US, they cant figure out what the code means etc. I figure the code is being thrown due to the O2 sensor not being hooked up because I dont have the wiring for it etc.

Is there an electrical fix I can do to kill the ECU from throwing that code? Because I dont want to have to buy the wiring for it.

Thanks for the link on the exhaust, im gonna check that out. How big of a diff did it make for you? And if your catless how is the smell in the car, any fuel smell?

Thanks,

-John

Just checked it out and wish I could read jap haha. The downpipe looks nice though, whatever pipes are out right now that you know of, and what is the approx price.

Also, my mods at the moment are a larger MRT TMIC, MRT catback exhaust, Intercooler hosing, turbo inlet hose, Blitz SUS (the new one, not the old one that had problems).

Im looking to go full exhaust, flywheel, pulley, larger turbo, ecu, fmic etc etc. What simple mods do you guys suggest?
