Harvey,

Looks more like you were deliberately trying to spark it all off again when I do believe you said you prefered it when everyone was quiet?!

I am not trying to start anything by the way, and this is not the place if I was. I am just saying what I see.

Very well done on your 415bhp Alan

JGM

Well it was addressed to Alan. I find it very amusing he gave up modding at the week-end and is back on the trail by Wednesday.
Interesting you feel the need to get involved.

Angry

Lets all put angry faces on .... I mean a power thread wouldn't be a 'real' power thread unless it was corrupted and locked

hi alan

the ported shroud will not actually change teh top end at all, as the top end is obviously governed by the flow rate of compressor/engine/cams, etc

what it will allow you to do is pull in the boost earlier and more aggressive with out the surge that we got couple of times. i have got a similar design on my turbo as you know and that is why i can get 2bar boost by 3600-3700k ( 5th gear) and still manange over 500bhp.

Sam

A ported shroud can also increase the maximum flow capacity of a compressor. The secondary feed between vanes effectively increases the compressor inlet area.

are you saying it will increase the a/r ?

i am not sure about this, however it is nothing that i would diss until we actually try it.

the ported shroud as you know is somehting that has been around of years, HKS, garrett etc have been using them for a while now. however, they never really quote any increase in top end power with it.

i have got a ported shroud on mine, and compared to my previous turbo i get no surge at all, i can do 120mph holding part throttle doing a 1bar if i wish to do so.

Yes, at high flow it has the effect of increasing a/r ratio but at low flows the air flows the other way (out the ports) which makes the compressor perform as if it has a smaller a/r ratio. ie it can efficiently add more pressure for the same rotational speed.

At a pure guess, I would say they welded a 3" tube on the outside of the normal inlet, and slotted the normal inlet in 3 arcs.

At least that's what I might suggest.

well I know how I did my last hybrid.. (not my own) and that brings full boost (20psi) in at 2200rpm on a 2ltr.

Paul,

It's much easier to start with the TD06 75mm inlet cover. Then it just needs machining, no sleeving, or welding.

If you have the larger cover to hand then it's machineable I suppose. Thinking about it, the smaller cover doesn't have the blades far enough out to be able to cut in from the outside to create the slots.

here is what a ported shroud should look like, but they can vary a little bit but you get the idea.

it is not a secret mod as a lot of people may want you to belive

Sam, Your right..

I have one on my turbo, in fact I have since I purchased the turbo way back

If you look at the Garrett GT40 covers (the ones as used by volvo) then you will see that the shroud is actually cast as part of the compressor cover.

I'm not in the know, please enlighten, as that link to evo piccys doesn't really show much actual detail. only the surface of the hole / slot.

Is it something I could machine ? (spare housing assumed)

does the inlet pipe fit over the whole lot including the holes / slots?

If so how does it attatch on that evo pic ? it looks from here that the clamp area for the inlet pipe is inside the area of the vents ?

I agree Sam, there is no 'secret mod' with regard to any turbo specs as far as I'm concerned, just some suppliers would like to think so

Alan G, John B, John H, Harvey, Jonny Gav, SG72 - You have seen my turbo have you not ?

Alan - I'm free 1st - 7th Jan if you want to try this compressor casing.... or are you on hol ?

Andy (in the know)
