Took my car up to Star Performance today to get the cars’ final power figure as I feel it’s time to move on and do other things.

The car is a MY99 UK car.

I’ve achieved what I set out to do and that was to see over 400 horsepower using bolt on aftermarket items and run it on pump fuel (Optimax) and no other additives, be it water, NF, methanol or whatever else can be used to increase BHP.

No internal engine work has ever been done to the engine, the toil and sweat of the past few years trying out various parts has finally came to an end and now I intend to enjoy the car as it is.http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/icons/icon14.gif

I ran the car four times and on the final run it produced 415BHP and 352 IB ft. This was on 1.4 bar of boost pressure. :)

One of my earlier runs actually produced more power than this, but the three previous runs showed a dip in the 5000rpm area  which for some reason has dogged me for over a year. I spent a bit of time altering the fuelling in this area and glad to say, it’s now eliminated and the power curve is pretty good. http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/icons/icon6.gif
I honestly believe I could better the figures, either in the mid range or slightly more at the top, maybe a quicker spool up etc, but couldn’t care less. The goal has been achieved and that’s enough for me.

What I liked about today is that Jim at Star Performance has no bias to the scoobs at all and so had no interest in giving *good figures* for me, the customer. His advice and helpfulness today deserves credit and I’m extremely grateful he spent the time with me and my car.

As a footnote, we also ran a standard Impreza P1 as a comparison and the figures produced for that car were bang on the money. In other words, the figures Subaru indicate a P1 should be showing.

good result alan

are you running 1.4bar to redline?
must be the best result for a uk car with standard internal

mikee

john banks 13 December 2003 08:40 PM

And it should hold together at that level of boost. Why not enjoy it now you've achieved that or will you get bored?

AlanG 13 December 2003 09:00 PM

Mikee
Yes running 1.4 bar to the redline.

John
Car sounds and feels really sweet at this level. Doesn't come across as being overstressed at all, so yes i'm now going to enjoy it for what it is. :)

dougies549 13 December 2003 09:11 PM

Hi Alan

That is one h!ll of a result you pulled out the bag there M8

Congratulations on getting that kind of power from a totally STANDARD ENGINE and no internal mods done, plus it is also run on standard fuel like optimax and no additaves added. :) :P

At the end of the day this is all bolt on mods and proves there is light at the end of the tunnel for every 1 else. :)

Glad to see the the roller's are spot on as always. :D

All the best M8

I must also agree with mikeesingh that you now be running the most powerfull UK Scoob with out going internal or additives. :)

Cheers Dougie + Diana :)

Andy.F 13 December 2003 09:15 PM

Nice one Alan, excellent result for straight Optimax on a non Sti :) I knew you were not really serious about selling the turbo, It's just that you are not used to having the same one on for so long ;):D

Now you will have Steve (sg72) on the phone to me looking for another 10bhp from his similar spec Sti5 :D Maybe I should send him up to Sam for mapping ;)

Are you planning to try the OBX headers on this set up or are you calling it a day ?

Andy

ps - Well done to Sam too :)

Denmark 13 December 2003 09:59 PM

Great result,

Is it run with a link?.

If it is, can i ask how much advance you drive with,

What kind of AFR are you running?

Thanks,
Skassa

johnfelstead 13 December 2003 10:23 PM

excellent results alan!

AlanG 13 December 2003 10:45 PM

Thanks guys. :)
With a response like that it makes it all worthwhile in the end. http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/icons/icon14.gif
Makes you feel like you've accomplished something and might be of benefit to others that want to see what can be achieved as funds permit.

Dougie
Cheers Dougie. I thought i wasn't getting there, but it's good to see the light at the end of what was a dark tunnel!! ;)

Andy
Haven't given it a thought yet about the OBX, but gut feeling is I probably won't cause i've reached my target for this engine.

All credit to Sam as well. His knowledge and helpfulness with my car has kept me going as have several members on this board which we all know, yourself included. Without the advice from Scoobynet members past and present, this thread would never have materialised. Take a bow gentlemen. http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/icons/icon6.gif

Skassa
Yes i run a Link ECU.
I would need to check the map again as i can't remember the timing off the top of my head.

Today my first run was 10.3:1, the last was at 11:1.

Alan

harvey 13 December 2003 10:50 PM

Well done Alan. Your dogged determination and grit have paid off...at last. Glad you saw it through the despondent times and I know you will have accumulated a lot of knowledge as to what works and what does not.
Getting the results without water injection, fuel additive, multiple fuel pump crap and so on makes it even better, while many are struggling to get to 350bhp there are only a handful who know how to get beyond 400bhp.

sg72 13 December 2003 11:08 PM

Well done Alan.

'sgood to see it can be done on a UK car as well.

Cue a hord of Folks in the hunt.

Andy. AS IF! Seeya Wednesday?

Lol!

AlanG 13 December 2003 11:11 PM

Hi Harvey

I was shocked to be honest when the first run showed over 400.
I had conceded that 400 would be elusive and honestly expected about 370 or thereabouts but seeing the 400 encouraged me to try a few more things on the map and even though the third run produced the highest figure, the power/torque curve on the last run made my day. It's as if everything just fell in to place. :)

Jim also made comment on how much better it felt with the mixture being leaned out slightly.

Alan

AlanG 13 December 2003 11:14 PM

Cheers sg72

Need to meet you some time.
Jim said your car was impressive. Very quick car i believe. Nice one! :D

Now the thing is....it's all very well having the power...but i now need the driving tuition. :)

Make a date for TOTB3?

Alan

Callum Ferguson 14 December 2003 12:45 AM

Well done Alan, tremendous result and modest with it. The help you have passed on to others, like me, is appreciated in the same way :D

I hope you continue the search:) Maybe Star will see a handful of 400+ cars at the next RR day :D

regards,
callum

Scoty 14 December 2003 12:47 AM

carlos
Yep congrats to Sam for his efforts.http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/icons/icon14.gif I've been told he's been getting good results out of EVO's on the MLR.

Top bloke.

Alan

carlos_hiraoka 14 December 2003 03:32 PM

Alan did u have a chance to test his own EVO ;) ?????

Carlos H.

AlanG 14 December 2003 06:52 PM

I did Carlos. :) Very, very nice... :D Miles away from what he had before!

Alan

Maddog 14 December 2003 06:56 PM

I'm sure i read a while ago that someone else got 400 horsepower out of a UK car.

But think he ran loads more boost and NF to get it?

Is there any other std internalled UK cars with these kind of figures?

P20SPD 14 December 2003 08:17 PM

Alan

Upmost respect for you. You are down to earth, plain and simple.

I knew nothing about your car until afterit ranontherollers at Well Lanein October 2002. From that moment on i knew that your car was going to be the better of mine, for which i applaud.

I applaud your persistance with your goal, and congatulate you on your result.

Please stick with the scoobies, as people like you are what make the community needs.

After our recent communications, and the result today, you have inspired me to try beyond my 350bhp goal, and go for more.

Mail me re your TMI

Steven

sg72 14 December 2003 08:38 PM

Think only J. Banks. Has did this so far.

John I believe was also running 1.6 bar with NF. booster.

And with a upgraded gearbox.CMIIW.

Alan. You have certainly set a new standard.

Cheers

Steve.

Maddog 14 December 2003 09:15 PM

I hate searching but finally came across John's thread when he hit 400+ in his 2.0, but according to the info he gave on the thread it was all a bit..well..erm, confusing and a bit sketchy IMO.

How long do you think your car will stay together at this level Alan ?

teknopete 14 December 2003 09:18 PM

Alan,

All I can say is "U da man m8" ;) Excellent result :)
Glad 2 c that all u r work has paid off big style.
Next time u r commin up our way gimme a shout bud,
