There's a tailor near me who's managing to keep the business going through being very good at what he does and having very happy customers. Basic price for a bespoke with good cloth is just less than £1000 (first suit) though later ones are a are somewhat less expensive as he has all my measurements.

Fits like a glove, feels fantastic to wear, and the material is very long lasting. Oh, and even I look good in one, which anyone will tell you takes some doing.

I'd not call that a rip off - would you?

Exactly.... but people are been led to belive they are buying a English made suit. Thats the problem. I know of one very very famous tailor in london. All the sub 1£k suits he "makes" come from Egypt..

If you are after suits for regular use, you will be suprised how even quality suits wear quickly, cost me a fortune when i worked in the city, glad i can were jeans and t's to work now.

have had a good selection of varying prices.

dont laugh but one of the best i bought for everyday use was a Marks and Spencers jobbie that comes with a fluffy cotton bag so you can wash it in your machine at home.

bought 2 and i think they were about £200, will save you mega bucks in dry cleaning alone.

also check out the Ted Baker endurance range they look good and lasted well.

My favourites were a Hugo Boss suit that fits very well but i dont wear it that often as i think it wouldnt wear that well. I had a Armani number i used to wear a lot and that faded really quickly think i only got 6 months regular wear (2 times a week) out of that one. Infact I think the armani was the most exspensive and the worst out of the bunch.

I can recomend getting a different suit for each day of the week if you wear them everyday so you can hang and air them, if you wear a suit 2 or 3 days on the trott it will need cleaning again. you will see how bigger difference this makes when you a spending £50 a motn cleaning suits.

 

A few years ago I was all labels - Boss, Armani and all that nonesense with Pinks double cuffed shirts at £60 a pop. They are all delicate rubbish. Like driving a Lancia Thema 8.32 (remember them) for your daily commute - they wore quickly and lost their shape.

If you are on a budget then go to M&S for shirts, ties and suits. Otherwise, find a tailor and go the made to measure route with a suite and 2 pairs of trousers for around £750 - £1k. Also, tailored shirts are good but I don't find them worth the extra(I find Lewins and Charles Tyrwhit do the job). You'll get a suit that fits like a glove and you will not go back to off the peg (nice lairy linings as well if that floats your boat).
