Question

As per title really, who makes decent suits and how much do they go for?

Will £300 get me anything decent?

I bought a Haggar (Black Labal) suit in the US last year, it seems quite nice. can't remember what it cost (about 500 dollars i think).

Cheers
Steven - totally clueless about suits!

If you're relatively thin, then go for a black versace. a nice cut, but you need more than £500. well worth it though.

i bought a jeager in a sale last year - i hardly ever wear suits either! it was about £300, and to my mind it's quite ok. the shop adjusted it so it fits properly, and it does the job. i'm sure it's nothing in the league of hand made, £2k plus suits but as i don't work in the city no-one really cares.

so long as the fabris is a decent wool type thing, the cut is ok, it fits you and you don't wear a polyester tie, you should be fine.

Try a mate of mine - Iconic Suits, 01179070287. Suits are custom made and start at £200. Even have Boss logos or anything you want.

I got mine made up for me by a nice tailor in Hong Kong-about £400 for a very good quality 3 piece. Of course I now look like a Tong gangster but hey, the girls seem to like it.

I'm not a fan of ready made suits although if you have a good build it is possible to find some good ones. Any skimping here is IMHO a false economy

PC: The suits are made in Egypt. Most of the suppliers who make all of Jaeger suits also make some other well Known makes..Some "made in italy" !!! cos Jo public love all that krap.

next years collection will be very nice..maybe the best yet.

if you ever go again...Contact me first.

i'm ok on the shoes part luke...

whatever i *do* look like, it definitely isn't the manager of your local tesco's or someone who sells stuff.

i might need another suit next year; if so i'll drop you a mail.

cheers.

I wear suits every day and so wear them out quite rapidly. I would now never spend more than £300 on a suit. Jaeger Factory shop will get you a £400-500 suit for £200-300. It will be last seasons design, but a suit should last for more than a year.

Crombies are also good (in Jan sales only)

Matt

do you visit the one near matlock???

I love kenzo and Helmut lang ..but have a "Herbie Frog" (spelling??) that is my all time best. Some of these Asian tailors that visit the UK make a good suit for the money.

Cool

Save a little bit more, find a decent tailor and get one made - you'll never wear off-the-peg again...

Pure wool much better than wool/poly mix. The latter can blister where the two layers come apart, even on the pricier brands.

No idea about shops in UK, sorry. I've moved on a bit from Burton...

Made to measure suits are a complete rip off. Please don't fall for all the crap that a salesman tells you. As for brand names... Did you know Armani and M+S Italian Collection are made on the same production line?

A bespoke suit is the ultimate, but very expensive. there are very few tailors around who know how to do the job properly, it is a dying art.

Best bet is to buy a suit length of wool from "oop north" then have a Savile Row tailor make the suit for you. You can save a packet this way

Warning....

A lot of so called tailor made suits from certain Streets in London etc,are made up in India Turkey etc . the details are faxed/emailed over and the suits made and shipped within 5 days. HUGE profit. Shirts even worse for this....

Remember most shops are just middlemen.... go direct.

Go to the best area near you and then visit the best charity shops. Find a very good quality suit that either fits you or is a fraction to big. Find a good tailor to alter it. Look for the quality of the initial cut and cloth.

Could be done for less than £100 all in .The suit could be ££££'s worth. Dont dismiss the idea. people who spend a fortune on suits tend only to wear them a few times.

Luke.

Just because the suits are made overseas does not mean they are not as good as suits that are made in this country. The modern machinery in Turkey and Israel makes our menswear manufacturers (whats left of them) look outdated.

IMHO the real nasty stuff comes from Thialand and Hong Kong where they turn a suit round in 24 hours. That stuff is absolute ****e, I have had so many customers bring abortions to me for recutting that I feel I know those cowboys by name

If you ever travel through Amsterdam's Schippol airport, they normally have good stock/selection of Hugo Boss Suits for about300 Euros.

I buy British suits, find them more sylish and hard wearing. The last one I bought was made in Norfolk, 22 hours of cut to produce something that people really notice.
