Question

NotoriousR

How (in strictly hypthetical terms) does one get around the NTL DNS servers (apart from using another provider) ?

We're sat here and my technically literate colleague has come up blank.

more info

A damaged undersea transatlantic cable is being blamed for causing havoc for Net and phone users in the UK last night.

A number of ISPs are understood to have been hit by the problem, which surfaced (the problem, not the cable) yesterday afternoon at around 4pm.

The cable - which is owned by a consortium of telcos - is believed to have hit a snag (figuratively speaking, of course) somewhere off the French coast. France Telecom, which is responsible for that section of cable, is sending a boat out to examine the damage.

At this stage it's not known exactly what the damage is or what caused it. However, the effects of the incident were felt in the UK last night.

BT has confirmed that some of its voice services were hit by the outage, while NTL blamed the cable problem for downing its Net service - including web browsing, email, ftp and newsgroups - for around eight hours.

The service was back up and running by around 1am today, although the cableco has conceded that some punters may still be suffering problems this morning.

Telewest confirmed that its customers also experienced difficulties accessing email and personal webspace for around four hours. Although it's still investigating the matter, a spokesman acknowledged that the problems could be a result of the damaged cable.

And Tiscali said it was unaffected by the incident, although some of its punters may have found accessing US-based sites slower than usual.

uksti,

If you know the IP address of any other DNS server, simply assign your connection that server instead of NTL's own DNS assigned servers.

Personally, I tend to use NTL's own and another non-NTL server, so at least one should work.

B2Zero,

I was got told a story by a guy at BT, I don't know how true it is, but he swore blind it was the truth.

BT noticed an outage on one of their major connections and the trace equipment showed the fault to be far out at sea, so a ship was despatched to the area to locate the problem and repair it.

They sent down a diver (I'n guessing this is paraphrased, surely the cables are too deep to be accesible to a diver, so maybe they sent down a sub-thingy?) and when they got there they found that a huge shark had bitten into the cable and had been electrocuted.

Still sounds like bull to me, but its a funny story if true.

The same guy told me about it taking 6 weeks to check a circuit in Africa because the cable literally went from tree to tree through some of the remotest parts of Africa.

EDIT: just to add, this is a story from a while back, nothing to do with the current outage

If you have seen the size of the armoured cable they lay undersea, I doubt that a shark would have gone through it! Good story though

Im sure they lay these cables in places where the sea bed is relatively stable, but there are undersea tremors and landslides which could easily affect a well armoured undersea cable.

Well that's my 2 peneth anyway

I don't think they're particularly well armoured either, Australia had major probs a couple of years or so back after a dragging anchor destroyed one of their 2 major connections.
