I personally have never been there and don't want to have to move into a bad area!
N e Info will be welcomed!

Rich Tee - 150K for 2 bed in Wokingham?? You're avin a larf! I live near there and that's what you'd pay for a tent in a back garden. Nice place though.
As for Reading: if you're working south of the river I'd live south of the river. The only bridges (Caversham and Sonning) are painful to cross.
If anyone mentions 'Whitley' - run like hell!!! If an estate agent mentions a propety in 'West Reading' don't even think about it. It'll be some dodgy terraced house on/off the Oxford Road. Full of prostitutes and similar low lifes ...

Wokingham's quite nice - decent train service to Reading, frequent train service to Waterloo too, but it is a bit slow. Handy for the M3 and the M4 too.
Pricewise - three bed semis seem to be around 200 grand.

Well I was born in Reading and have lived there all my life. I'm currently at Uni in Portsmouth.
Reading is a very up and coming place to live - the city centre (which they refuse to acknowledge as a city, despite Brighton and Hove getting city status which is tiny in comparison) is very pleasant with the Oracle shopping / bar complex a recent addition at a quater of a billion pounds investment. I personally dont have any problems with the traffic there but not sure what the central area is like in rush hour.
There are decent shops, pubs, bars and stuff like that, but the only thing lacking is a really good club in the heart of the city.
The train to london is very quick and only about £10 on a travel card. House prices are pretty high as its proximity to London and large investment in places like Green park is starting to show.
I live in Lower Earley which is a really pleasant place to live, my only gripe about the place is the fact that there isnt much variation in landscape (i.e no big hills, water etc.) and the fact that its all very new.
There are Barry boys in every place. I would personally avoid Whitley and maybe Tilehurst, but the more I go to Tilehurst the more I dont mind the place.
If you are very young then I would avoid moving to the outskirts of the city as there isnt a lot to do there unless you want to drive or get the bus to the city centre - where there is quite a lot to do. Despite what some people have said here, it certainly isnt a dump and is pretty high up on the list of places I have been to.
Best thing to do is spend a day in Reading - drive around and look at all the areas and go with what you feel.

Well, you will be moving closer to me - so, its not all bad!!
As has been said, stay to the south of the M4 - Bramley is nice as is Sherfield-on-Loddon ... not forgetting Aldermaston, Mortimer and Grazely.
I think the cost of the houses will give a shock although they are falling quite fast in the areas stated above - give them 6 months and they will be 10% down on last years peak, another 6 months should see a further fall
Renting could be a wise first move
Pete
Edited to say, avoid Whitley as has been said - oh, yes, and also where Huxley lives (really rough there!)
