mate they couldnt prove the speed i was doing at the time of impact, no real tyre marks to take measurments from to work it out, i was a very lucky man that day, you dont get many second chances like that.

Pics are weird i dont know why its doing that??

Thumbs up

Guys, the Vauxhall transfer boxes can fail in more ways than one. Seeing as Damian was on a bend when he lost control i suspect that the txb failed rather than locked. This could be due to any number of reasons but basically it sounds as though the car lost the drive to the rear wheels, easily possible with these boxes. If you would like me to explain any more then i'll be more than happy.

**** it...

Basically the system is too clever for its own good. It uses a series of clutches along with a pressure plate to engage the drive to the rear wheels via a viscous coupling. The system is designed to disengage the drive to the rear wheels above 16mph to aid for more predictable (FWD) handling. It is this feature which causes the problems, a feature that Subaru (thankfully) did not incorporate into the Impreza.

The 4wd systems main enemy is heat. Heat build up inside the txb casing leads to premature wear of the clutch rings and pressure seal and the inevitable transfer box failure. This heat comes from running mismatched or unevenly worn tyres which in turn leads to wind up in the viscous coupling which provides a source of heat.

If there are any takers for any more useless GM txb info or you'd like even more detail i'm more than happy to oblige.

For the record Damian asked me to feature the pictures of his car on my Cav Turbo site to serve as a warning to others, that was almost directly after the accident.

Damian, you ARE a lucky chap.

I can't believe a so called "enthusiast" was not wearing a seatbelt! Putting aside the fact that you were illegal, it's just plain common sense?
Not really. Personally, I always wear a seatbelt anyway, but the reason seatbelts are a 'success' is becasue they reduce the chances of injury in a minor shunt.

If you have a big shunt, there are many situations where wearing a seatbelt will kill you, and there are many where not wearing one will kill you. Unfortunately, before you have the shunt you don't know which type it's going to be

PS: Nice tyres -- Yoko A539s if I'm not mistaken

aye mate cav was at star lots of times been with scoobynet last year then with Mig,and corsasport

I always wear a seatbelt now and i know it was silly, but i agree with Carl thou.

i miss the Cav sometimes in the power it had compared to the Subaru but i know im better off.

this all happened in NOV 02 but ive just manage to get round to posting pics up here.

thanks for all your posts some are very good lol.

The Transfer boxes on vauxhall are crap end of story always causing me probs when i had it not to be trusted.

i clock the speed just by chance i think thats what made my situation worse knowin what speed i was doing.
