Why does nobody take any pride in their job anymore?

I can't really complain about my job, I don't too that much, plus am paid pretty well for what i do. However, the state of this country is getting worse, I can't afford to buy a flat in my home town, let alone purchase the house I grew up in which I would love to purchase. Petrol prices are silly, the taxman takes way to much of my wage, motorists are seen as public enemy number one and taxed by means of stealth taxes which are not put back into roads but into the coffers of police forces.
These are some of the reasons I'm glad to be in the very fortunate position of moving to Canada, where I have my job, and a new country, life, people, and everything else waiting for me.

Markus,
I'd be happy in my job too if i was able to reap the benefits of my last 10 years of education and experience. The IT market at the moment is so dire that it's hard just trying to get a decent wage. Add all the little taxes that we have to pay these days together and that decent wage is barely enough to live confortably on.
I actually worked out how much worse off i'd be on benefits instead of working for a living and was rather shocked to find out that my standard of living wouldn't change all that much. The major drawback is that i'd have to take my 200sx off the road and stick to using the micra so that rules out sponging off the state

Half the trouble is that the cost of living in the South is now so silly that even people earning above average incomes cannot afford to buy a place to live.
I am self-employed at the moment and that's causing me problems with getting a mortgage, so I am looking at taking a permanent job for a while. However, as I am single, I have only one income to borrow against, and the maximum I would be able to borrow is a good 40k or so less than I'd need even to buy a flat. Of course, I could move to a cheaper area, but my chances of finding work in my field in a cheaper area are greatly reduced.
It's the same throughout much of the South. No wonder people are so disillusioned.
