John,
I can't be the only one who thinks that you stripping the car apart is a tradgedy, to me at least, your car was a benchmark of what i would have liked mine to end up like, i doubt it ever would mind, but the thought was there at least......
Happy BMW..ing....... blimey, can't believe i said that eh.....

In the form it was in it was unreliable for a road car, requiring attention beyond routine servicing a couple of times a year - mainly torque and boost related with the engine and gearbox which could be controlled by capping the fun levels so the biggish turbo was not made the most out of, but the project aim of 450/400 AND reliable was a lot to ask. It did do around about this (sometimes a bit less sometimes I suspect a bit more) for 30000 miles and never left me by the roadside. We learned a lot doing it though and had a lot of fun particularly with motorbikes. Ultimately though, this sort of performance is not going to come at the price I was willing to commit to it with reliability unless it is on a motorbike. I doubt I would ever attempt such a wild road car project again, and would aim to stop short of going into the engine or gearbox!

john,
i've always read your posts with great interest and have constantly wondered where the hell you got the time to cover so much ground. i never understood how you managed to find the time for enough sleep to get stuck back into it the next day and on top of all that keep your intentions and findings updated on here.
in the past 3-4yrs ive owned over twenty different cars of which two were BMW 325's. i loved both but not enough to keep despite the second being concours. ive had 4 big ej20 failures and swore each time id never buy another subaru. but i did. its very hard to find another car that will do for me what a subaru does despite the inherent volatilities. i cant help feeling 'the urge' will raise itself in that fine shed of yours for that thrill yet again john..not intended sexually of course!! counsellors will clarify this bmw thingy as nothing more than a temporary virus...it is treatable.
theres a scenario going on in my head that says theres lots of john banks's's'ses's and seventeen-plus imprezas in your driveways's, john.
i raise my hat to you.

Temporary virus, it did feel like that when I gave the bmw thing too much of its fairly limited torque beans (that wouldn't have troubled the Subaru) in a large wet roundabout and the back end kicked out like a kicky thing and the traction brain seemed very slow to intervene, but surprisingly by then I had actually managed to dial in just enough opposite lock... I think I've found my new nirvana for a few months, until I stuff it backwards into a hedge LOL.
I will go and try a Spec D when it comes out... new Subarus are so easy to modify... 20G, fuel pump, remap, exhaust but the new RS4, M3 or a used E60 M5 (once they settle properly onto their inevitable depreciation rollercoaster) will all be interesting too.
