mechanical sympathy or driving like a ***** is the only reason a scoob would have trouble seeinmg off a Clio!

i considered a Clip 172 (pos a 182) a few years back, but the dealer was an **** and basically looked down at me and was much more interested in the family coming to buy a motor....
i did have a quick nosey at it and it looked small (im 6ft3 etc) and when i touched the headlight washers it made a nasty noise , may have broke it
so never got to drive it :/

so went to the Honda garage, tested a Civic Type R EP3, never looked back

im sure the clio , specially the cup, is quite good on the twistys, but id prefer the Jap reliable rev happy great gearboxed CTR over one personally

Ive just brought a 172 sport after selling the scoob. Not my cup of tea but i picked it up real cheap, paid Ł1100, on 2003 with 95k miles. i cant complain beacuse it runs nice and smooth but it defiantly eats 325's. my mates got a 328 and i always leave him. strong ends better on the beemer but by then im gone. but yea handlings not amazing (tripod style) but with just a exhuast, induction and a 183 manifold i think im near 180 bhp

Had a play with one of these tonight. Very impressed. I owned a phase 1 172 before and shouldnt have been surprised.

The car in question was a stripped Clio Cup 172 with a dash, two bucket seats and thats about it and my classic WRX is still around 260.

Nothing in it until 4th gear and the WRX pulled away slightly but nothing to shout about.

Anyone who dismisses these as french tat should try one.

Never had a Cliop 172 but my wife had a Cup 200 and I think, when driven well it'd give a UK spec standard Impreza a run for it's money! I found it a really nice car, great delivery and very predictable when throwing it around

I'm building a 172 Cup track car at present, its not far off being finished.....Its a quick little car with some nice mods including the JMS RS2 inlet(the extended version)which is based on the MR25 Jenvey inlet manifold, the induction noise sounds great....Can't wait to get it out for its first shake down!

I had a Clio 182 a couple of years back, really great little cars, I often think if I had reason for another toy or a dedicated track car, a ph1 172 would be ideal - only reason I moved it on was due to lack of space, but if it was a second car that wouldn't be a problem for me.

When I had that I went to test drive a standard Newage WRX and felt very flat, difficult to tell as the Subaru felt a lot bigger/heavier, but even then, it felt pretty tame compared to the 182 - although I imagine in reality there was little between them, just that the smaller, lighter Clio felt a little more raw.

Although against a mapped WRX it would be no contest (although the 182 did go round corners very well), which is why I bought a mapped one!!

172/182 are the last of the old school hot hatches, no fancy electronic wizardry to keep you on the road, no special "sport mode" or electric steering or adaptive suspension, just a small light weight body and a relatively big normally aspirated punchy engine for a raw full on driving experience that'll encourage you to drive a like a hooligan and put a big smile on your face. Still lovin' my Trophy after 5 years ownership which is pretty good for someone who use to change their cars every couple of years or so.

I took a Clio 182 in part ex on my p1 a month ago and I thought I'd just sell it on but I've still got and will keep it for a while, it's not as quick (obviously) as the p1 but I tell you what it's impressive the speed you can take corners (it's got both cup packs) is unreal. I haven't had a chance to put it up against a wax but would defiantly think it would be close, as said if the Clio was flat out and the wrx not could be touch and go

Holy Thread Revival !!!!
2003 it started. Wowzer !!!! Nice work lads

was funny I saw this thread in the main thread list as it was only a few days ago I had a play with one of these. My wrx is modded though, 328/370 so I just left him. When we pulled up to a roundabout, he got along side me and gave me the thumbs up! driver respect
