"shops/buyers have little faith in them"

Little faith in what? Digital cameras? If so, you've got to be joking! Sales of conventional kit is way down (look for great deals). Digi cams are flying out of the shops!

We get Jessops staff in for Photoshop tuition, and they've been talking about Digi Cam sales being higher than conventional, for over a year now.

Buy the D100 for £700 now! Jessops trade price is just over £1500 incl Vat, so it's a steal (unless it already has been...).

Cheers

Compacts yes.But SLR bodies....... not so sure. Cannon and Nikon have screwed up big time with problems launching a new camera. Fuji/nikon are like a married couple...never talk to each other!!
people dont want to spend as they are sure a new camera is going to be launched.
Sure in a few years it will all settle down and we can enjoy the benefits that digital can offer.... But until then I will have to learn how to change film quicker...and I am quick now!!!

But If i find someone who wants to swap a D60 with grip for a 100000000000000000000% mint 1V with grip I would go for it.

"people dont want to spend as they are sure a new camera is going to be launched"

I know what you're saying, but again the Jessops guys are talking decent sales of Digi SLRs too. I bought one last week! :-)

It's a bit like that old saying: "if you don't buy a ticket..." and you could make your argument for just about anything that's computer related. Anyone with sense knows the PC or hardware you buy today, is updated in a few weeks time.

I'm delighted with the D100 and that's after using RB67s for 20 years!

Good luck anyway, and its nice to find someone with a bit of passion and dedication.

Cheers

Exclamation

Frisby: I presume you mean £1700 for the D100? At £700 I can guarantee that it's stolen, non-existent or otherwise dodgy.

If you're interested, I do have a fairly good list of reputable dealers that I'd be happy to post - the cheapest option will probably be to import one from the US or mainland Europe.

Just spotted this news article about a load of Nikon D100s that were stolen a few weeks ago. Maybe you should report the source of your £700 D100?

I was of the "won't buy a d60, the d(90?) will be out next year" philosophy until i borrowed one!

In all honesty, i find a 6m pixel slr to produce the right sort of size files for my use (tho i can understand portriature pros wanting more) - i get 400ish hi qulaity jPEGS or 140 RAWs on a 1Gb microdrive - how many of the bloody things will i need with 11m pixels! And even tho, you can compress further (in which case whats the point?) you WON'T - beacuse you paid for 11million and you're going to use it or be damned.

Like all elctronic Gizmo's - its moving on all the time and you have to jump in at some point. The PC i'm typing this into was the mutts 3 months ago when i bought it - but already superceded. Same principle!

Russ

PS, I'll tkae a dozen of those D100's!

Martin

They have built models and have not introduced them to the market due to so many problems.

The D30 is very slow focusing.

They arnt offering much over £1k for a D60. (They been a better shop than "Jessops")

Most manufacturers are bringing new models out too quickly.

Agree on the card front... woulndt use a micro drive. Lexar cards offer a "Info recovery" service.

Shops are getting the run around from them. This shop has over £20K of orders on Contax and Contax cant say when they will arrive..... Customers want to go abroad to buy or change to another camera .

Sure its swings and roundabouts!! but a bloody expensive one...

Oh dear Still clinging to the fence as stormy seas below

Lenses are the issue for me. Lenses make the picture and the camera merely records it. That's fundamentally where I come from. I'm not spending £1,500 on a lens that won't do what I want it to do in five years time.

Compacts are one thing, and digital have got it there no doubt at all (I have one and am delighted with it) but SLRs are where it gets serious.

Nikon have made a major pledge in producing a digital-format-only lens but others seem to be p1ssing about with digital formats. Are they trying to squeeze out the likes of Sigma and Tamron, who have been a thorn in the sides of the major camera manufacturers for decades?

This could be their chance to clean up the camera AND lucrative lens markets to their own-marque only kit? Call me cynical if you like, but I've been an 'early adopter' too often in the past and it's cost me a bloody fortune.

The market is booming which inevitably means winners and losers. I shall wait until I can win with confidence.

And right now, film is still best. Fact. I might just turn the clock back and get a Leica R9 - only joking always hated the damn things Nice lenses, though.

Richard.

Question

I don't understand your reluctance to invest in lenses right now

The lenses I use most often are a Sigma 15-30, Canon 28-135IS and Canon 100-400L IS. They work on my D30 and they work on my EOS 33. Obviously I have to use different lenses at different times thanks to the D30's smaller sensor, but only the Sigma is ever likely to become obsolete when large area DSLR sensors appear.

Even then, I rather like the ultra-wide angle effect that I already get with film. I'll definitely be taking the EOS 33 and a few rolls of Velvia to the Grand Canyon next summer along with the D30.

With many new products, the pace of technical progress is awesome at first. Of course today's DSLRs will be replaced soon - but that doesn't mean that they'll suddenly become any less capable than they are today. Here is an example pic taken last week with my (obsolete) D30 and 100-400L - proof, to me at least, that I really don't need a new camera any time soon.

Being an early adopter only really hurts if you feel the need to upgrade all the time; my car, PC, television and hi-fi are all about 3 years old, and they all work every bit as well as they did on day one. Sure, they're not as good as their present day replacements, but I've had 3 years' use out of them (and I still don't like the new STI much!).

Taz

A mate who is the manager at one of the best dealers in London.Reccons that £1k is tooooooooo much for a s/hand D30. Ok they have the VAT ,costs etc but are only paying £700 + for them. So find someone who wants to trade and offer them £750 + for it.The price of D30's will drop very soon.

As martins has a good guarantee and he is prepared to handle it..then his would be worth more.

OK, my last post on the subject...

Luke - I don't know where you went or who 'your guy' is, but I can't believe some of what you've posted

My guy tells me to forget the D30 give me one (good) reason why? Yes, I have one so am naturally defensive

.. only buy a D60 for a grand S/H highly unlikely to get one at that price for the next few months

the manufactures have cocked up big time Explain more

and the shops/buyers have little faith in them Why? Examples?

To many product recals and no communication!!! Examples of actual recalls please..Ok, there have been a couple of software updates for the D30 and D60, but with user updatable firmware that's not a problem

Also horror stories of micro drives loosing info.due to been fragile Some truth there, but I think it's very rare. I prefer multiple 256Mb CF cards. Anyway, that's not a valid reason to diss DSLRs
