Yeah, I got this too. It's a bugger to drive but very realistic. Like Steve, I only really know the Nurburgring but don't claim to have mastered that. Most of the time I just concentrate on trying to stay on the track. Best lap is 9:00:16. Doh!

I've not played it in ages though.

You won't be able to view replays for anywhere but Watkins Glen with the demo. (Not sure about add on tracks, you can probably use them in the demo too.) To view a replay just put it in the replay directory inside the game directory.

One important URL I forgot was

Just ordered it from Amazon - £8.99 less VAT (for me ).

So, how many months is it gonna' take me to learn?!

Do I just need to patch to 1.2? Been reading up a little and there seems to be loads of utils out there (all the way to swapping engines between cars!) - are any recommended?

And what's a good base set-up to get started with?

Thanks
Richard

I've seen Grand Prix Legends in the shops for under £15 under the Sierra Classics label for anyone interested.

Simon's replays above are really cool - I haven't seen many people able to slide a GPL car so consistently - it looked more like a rally car than a Lotus 49!! In particular, Simon's lap of Crystal Palace is pretty impressive and well worth a look for the average GPL racer (like me - best of 52.8 at Crystal vs 51.30 in Simon's replay).

On the link front, check out

Simon,

I've put you in my buddy list - you're 20th out of 58 (I'm 45th and 33rd - I'll explain that in a moment). My name there is also gizmo71.

Any negative rank is good. I don't know what the current world record is but the UKGPL head honcho Marc Mercer is currently top of my buddy list with -63.41.

I've got two lots of times registered, some old times with a rank of about +16 which were set with a joystick (which I found suited my "just chuck it in" style better), and the current set which were done with a wheel. For the most part I've just gone out and set a "banker", I'm doing the tracks seriously as we come to them in UKGPL Season 3, so far only Kyalami and Monaco, generally I move on to race setup & practice once I've bettered my joystick time.

I see I'm nearly a second under you at Kyalami so I must be doing something right. The biggest gain is from the 'Ring where I need to spend a whole lot more time. I'm currently on +55 but should be able to knock 30 seconds or so off there without too much blood sweat and tears.

If you click on "League Central" on the main page and select UKGPL, that's a pretty good spread of mostly trustworthy drivers. Other good 'uns are Martin Granberg, of GPLReplayAnalyser fame, and Grant Reeve, (both of whom are old friends from my F1GP days), and Eldred Pickett, who's not fast but is a sort of "hero of the common people" in the GPL world.

Richard,

Yes, just patch straight to 1.2. There's a "NoCD" patch floating about too which is useful if you don't want to have to keep the CD in all the time. Make sure you do a full install or you will have all sorts of extra problems trying to play online.

The other really important patch is the 1.2 "discofix" patch, which makes it much easier to stay connected when online.

Everything else is optional. New tracks are arguably the most useful - the GPLEA ones are truly excellent, Solitude is superb, the others (Crystal Palace, Goodwood, and Snetterton) are also well worth the download. There are a bunch of other tracks such as Brands Hatch but they're nowhere near the GPLEA ones in terms of quality.

As regards setups, the default ones in 1.0 and 1.1 (and the demo) were truly appalling. The default setups in 1.2 are much better though and you will probably be better off sticking with until you're getting near the Papyrus "benchmark" times (the ones set in the replays that ship with the game).

I generally use Alison Hine's setups tweaked for extra stability. I'm more interested in setups which will last me race distance than GPLRank-style hotlap setups.

i really liked Toca2 and Rally Masters. CM 1 was also good.

never been into F1 games though.

got CM2 and its brilliant. streets (or maybe that should be forests !) ahead of CM 1 and all the other rally games out there at the moment)

i put all the detail levels on max, resolution to 1024*762*32 and i get the odd bit of slow down but nothing thats so far affected my racing.

i've got a p3 667, 256mb ram, 32mb Ge Force Pro (still an excellent card).

My mate who also has it is gonna phone me later to see if we can get it working head to head over ordinary phone lines and 56k modems !

Worth mentioning the OpenGL and Direct3D patches to speed up the graphics.

I bought the game way back and only supported 3D acceleration via Voodoo graphics cards.

You can get an OpenGL patch (3D hardware acceleration for all graphics cards)

You can also get a Direct3D patch (same as OpenGL but I find it tooooo fast and over-responsive)

You can download new cars and new tracks and stuff.

I reckon Simon's right about the online challenge - we should get everyone involved!

Cool

just tried playing a m8 at cm2 across 56k modems on standard telephone line.

brilliant. no slow down at all.

very good and well worth trying for 1-1 cm 2 games

The game works fine with the Voodoo3.

Seems like some configuration is in order.

E-mail me if you want assistance.

Holy cow! (woops, poor choice of colloquialism in light of BSE/CJD) I'm off the board for a few days, investigating driving sims on deja.com and what do I find when I return? Simon is testing World Sports Cars Totally Simon! I delayed GPLing because of the buzz on WSC and decided to wait for that.

In the mean time I bought Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed but can't get it to run on Win2K. Tried fixes suggested at

Miksmi,

WSC looks loverly, but I've lost count how many times a racing game has LOOKED good in the build up to the release but ended up driving terrbibly in practice.

The team behind the game should mean the game will be promising though.

I felt really let down by Grand Prix III. Geoff Crammond is a genius but somehow he managed to make the graphics look non-3D accelerated!! DOH!

DazV, Agreed, the WSC team credentials are great. Let's hope they deliver. I'm sure Simon will give them feedback appropriate to ensure that happens.
