Andy, sounds like a plan, if you want to kidnap one and take it to a lock up and torture it we can stick it in the back of the wagon!

reminds me of the revenge tactics on american mailboxes with baseball bats

Not that I condone behaviour of this sort!

Once again there is some absolute utter bollox being spouted in this thread - god it makes me fume

"You should drive at a speed where you can see around corners, and see whats ahead of you" What utter utter tripe.

Assuming this was a NSL road, then the legal limit is 60mph. I would like to meet the person that can do even half of that and then stop for something in the middle of the road around a blind bend. Even at 30, 99.9% of folk would have hit the bin.

Lets get one thing straight - a road is for driving a car on. If a child, person or animal (or person on an animal) is stupid enough to be hanging around in the middle of a dark road, with no street lights, on a NSL road then they deserve everything they get - and if it was a friend/relative I would say the same thing. It is up to pedestrians as well as motorists to be careful. A fallen cyclist shouldn't have been riding on a dark road, and shouldnt have been stupid enough to fall off.

Unbelievable some people

So your a perfect driver then Sure

I indicate, I check my mirrors, etc. I fully believe I could sit my test again tomorrow and pass it but in the woes and throws of the real world I do sometime pull back into the left lane and forget to indicate or don't come to a 100% stop at stop signs if I can see the road is clear and no I don't kick my tyres to check the pressure everytime I get into the car. I wonder what world some of you lot live in?

I’m no perfect driver but when it comes to a-b mode I believe I’m very good. I’m relatively courteous and indicate my intensions, I don’t tailgate or speed (when in a-b mode) and critically (IMO) I always try to accelerate/decelerate, etc such that my actions don’t require other road users to alter their speed/course.

AJ, what are you going to try and teach me?? If its behaving myself we've already established I'm better at that than you

Sipie/AJ ... if you guys are going to fight do it tomorrow - I’ll build you a pit and you can mud wrestle or something

DW - I'm with you on this point.

The road is for cars, not for in-animate objects, or people to be wandering around on, especially NSL roads in the country.

I'm just glad Andy is ok.

As for this roadtrip chap, as my orange 'think geek' t-shirt has printed on it, WTF?

Go an learn to read

anyway, enough. i'm off to take a blow torch to a wheelie bin

Saxo/AJ

No intention nor need to fight (although mud wrestling tempting)...

It's just I've heard this "cyclists should pay road tax" argument more than I've heard of "fuel surge" problems.....

If the road tax covered street lighting etc (which I don't think it does) then fair enough, but surely a separate 'cyclists tax' done on a pay as you ride basis, where money is ploughed into cycle lanes would be a great idea and I'd happily pay it to save sitting in this daily commuting drudgery

But who the hell would want to cycle on our roads when you could meet you or me coming the other way

Apologies for thread hijack but looks like a few others beat me to it

Yeah! Like road tax actually pays for road related stuff It pays for social working and stuff like that. If road and fuel tax paid for our roads we'd have the best roads, lighting and transportation system in the world.

Cyclists shouldn't pay for anything other than their bike IMO.

so lets get this straight...
SB you have a dig at me for being a considerate driver and say you've never laughed so much in your whole life:
Your saying that everytime you go out in the car you always check your mirrors and blind spots before moving off or changing speed, you always indicate before changing lanes or turning.....HA HA HA HA I've never had such a laugh in my life!
Putting aside the obvious lack of previous funny incidents in your life and my uncertainty as to why I need to check my blind spot before changing speed I do agree that I do check my mirrors and blind spot EVERY time I'm pulling out etc. (otherwise I might hit someone) and I do indicate whenever anyone might need to know what I'm planning (or they might run into me) you suddenly decide that maybe thats what you do too now:
I indicate, I check my mirrors
Are we to assume that you therefore drive around constantly laughing at yourself all the time too?

p.s. couldn't agree more about cyclists without lights

cheers for the smilie info si

If every car driver took a motorcycle test or even just the CBT, then the general standard of driving would improve bigtime..

Just my humble opinion..

Bad Luck, Andy..... Like Marcus I know the Tenterden/Appledore/Rye run... tho' more often in 4-Trak + horsebox on the way to Camber Now, that really is a case of going no faster than you can stop in

Sorry you got flamed....I think RB5320 got it about right. I'm sorry that the intemperate post didn't get pulled: it's perfectly reasonable to think and say that you were the author of your own misfortune, but it's HOW it's said that matters, as Webmaster has recently pointed out. As for me, I don't drive on the basis that someone may have put a dustbin at night in the middle of the road immediately round a corner on a rural National Speed Limit Highway. And neither do many others.

What really worries me more than anything else in this thread, is the developing possibility (probability) that the dustbin was placed maliciously by Kids. I won't labour the point!

Hope the car is back on the road soon

Phil

Right then here goes.....

Basically it appears that everyone who has a crash was driving like a complete TW47!?!? Well I personally take the opinion that accidents can and do happen. Andy clearly states that he was (a) Not under the influence of any drink or drugs... Good. (b) Not exactly hooning the ***** of the car. (c) knows the road well and finally has LEARNT A VALUABLE LESSON. I feel that as someone earlier posted a small child/animal would have made some form of bolt for the pavement/verge.

I think personally that the issue that should be at stake here is that the accident happend no one was killed and a little scraped paint and dented pride is the only damage caused.

I for one have seen how the most innocent looking accidents can kill and also how the worst shunts in history can see people walk away unscathed. I have worked in the health service and see people come out of cars in a very very bad way when all they have done is skidded on ice and gone into a spin and hit a kerb, car was nearly undamaged but the dog on the back seat caused a fair amount of damage, And other roll cars umpteen times driving like a **** and walk out unscathed. I personally would sooner see someone giving it a bit on a country A road than doing their make-up or TALKING ON A MOBILE on the motorway.

Just read your posts, bad luck on hitting something that shouldn't have been there in the first place.

If i were you i would contact the local authorities and ask them to explain why the bin was there! A friend of mine did this once and got compensation for it.

Wow!

Some posts here from people I really respect, but have gone down in my estimations.

1) The speed limit. Its not a target or a minimum, but a MAXIMUM. For the very hard of understanding ITS A MAXIMUM. It is the MAXIMUM speed you are legally allowed to do at any point until you next meet a trafic sign that then takes precedence over the last one that you saw. BUT, it doesnt mean that its safe to traverse the whole or any part of the road at that speed.

2) The roads are not race tracks. We have all been there driving too fast, and IMHO Ive seen people more likely to cause accidents by driving too slow. Why? because the majority of people in this country consider that they will take the risk of driving faster than they should LEGALLY do (myself included I would admit). Therefore the slow drivers are more of a risk.

3) If your sensible then you will drive slower round corners on roads ESPECIALLY country lanes. Hands up anyone who has never seen a hiker, horse, stopped car, pile of mud left by tractor, the tractor itself, another stopped vehicle on a country lane.... If you drive within your stopping distance then if one of the said objects is on or just after the corner you will stop, if you dont then you know you are going to collect it, and potentially kill someone/thing (yourself included)

4) If you want to drive your scooby at anywhere near its potential on our roads you need to be aware that realisically any motoring expert is going to say you were exceeding what is reasonable. That unfortunately could be construed as dangerous driving.

Some great flames in this post, but if your mature enought to sit back, the people making the soundest comments are the ones saying its irresponsible.
Yes we pay for the roads, but that doesnt give us the ultimate right to expect no hazards.

In my experience there are very few accidents, but a lot of poor judgements leading to motor vehicles coming together with other objects.

Take it easy guys, especially once we hit winter.

Exactly, it was a bin!! I got a 14 page flaming and I didn't even hit anything! It seems a lot of people are more interested in the what ifs that the realities. I accept it could have been (in each) case a child, other car, horse, etc but the bottom line is I hit nothing and the poster of this thread hit a plastic bin! That is fact. When someone posts up that they've just killed someone driving too fast then you'll get to use your flame guns.

Juan I was trying to point out that you seem to believe you drive without error all the time. I always check my mirrors, etc before pulling out but I bet there are times when I don't make as detailed a check of them as a should. An examiner would easily find minors with both mines and your driving if they witnessed it long enough.

Take it easy guys, especially once we hit winter.
Once!?!? Where have you been. Brrrrrrrr

Surely we should be able to safely stop in the distance we can see before winter rather than hit it

Andy glad you are okay and sorry to hear about the car.

Richard A - I agree with you one hundred percent the CBT should be mandatory for all car drivers. I check my mirrors far more now than I did be for my motorcycle training. I even do shoulder checks before changing lanes, eliminates the blind spot completely. It also makes you appreciate other road users far more.

To everyone that has flamed Andy I am truely in awe of your driving standards, maybe you should all consider setting up an advanced driving school.

No - winter creeps up on you without you realising, and is therefore an exception. Piling headlong into a weekend, or a public holiday though, is your own fault.

You don't buy a scooby to drive completely within the adherence of the law, unless you are a complete poseur. Its a car to drive fast, and push from time to time.

The trick is to do the speeding and pushing in the right places. I spend most of my time driving like a semi-granny, cos the roads are narrow, twisty and covered in cow****, leaves and mud. There are also loony walkers, cyclists, pedestrians, drivers and livestock lurking round blind bends. I do enjoy the nice roads

IT was a BIN....

Hmmmm let me think !, swerve round the bin and ditch the car £££££ damage...... I think I'll just hit the bin.

Kiddy, cyclist, furry critter in the road (cats excepted )
ditch the car £££££ damage ...... Money well spent/lost.

Life is more important than any bit of tin can (bin or scooby).

If I drove my scoob as some have suggested, I would get a pipe and pink slippers for christmas.

Sounds bad damage just for a dustbin...

At least it's repairable though, unlike mine...
