Nice pic's Paul - car looks in excellent shape.

Seems to be only a very small amount of them in the UK by all accounts.

So now we have - 24, 25, 45 for definate according to the plaques.

MIA - 66 and a.n.other in the UK. Down under - potential some?

Still haven't heard anything from STi regarding the build of the cars. Will send a reminder in the vain hope.

Keep looking folks!! ;-)

Hi Folks, A new entrant to scooby net here. I've got a version 1 Sti. I'll check the number and month tonight. To give you a little more background on the internals...I recently had my engine rebuilt by TSL after the big end went and contrary to popular belief that version 1&2 STI had cast pistons I can tell you they are most definitely forged. Well done STi

oh and before the rebuild the car was rolling roaded at powerengineering and put out 296bhp. The only mod I had done to the car was a Revoulution Motorsport turbo back exhaust (de-catted. Once it's fully run-in I'll take it back down for another power run.

Marky-San -

Should have some more recent pictures to put up soon. Those above are nearly 2 years old now !

BCR -

What caused the big end to let go, out of interest ? The story with STI 1's and pistons is mixed, from what I've heard. Some have forged, some don't. Same with closed vs open deck blocks. Some do, some don't. Luck of the draw, from what I can gather.

Enjoying my own catless car now - should be knocking close to 300bhp myself now !

Like the MR2 mate - what was the front bumper/kit on it? Looks smart. My mate had the Mk1 MR2 and it was great to drive - not really that fast, but felt and sounded like it.

Marky-san -

The MR2 was a turbo model imported in from Japan. Never found out what the front spoiler was on it, but it was so damn close to the ground it constantly knocked on the ground ! Nice car to drive, huge amounts of oversteer in the wet especially when the turbo kicks in, but quite a laugh.

when the engine was taken to bits it was found that the oil pressure relief valve was jammed - hense total loss of oil pressure - not what you want when doing 150mph on a belgian motorway. As a result the cylinder No3 bearing went and dispersed itself in tiny pieces thoughout the engine.

There have been posts on here saying that the valve on most cars when stripped down after blowing is jammed, due to engines bits jamming it rather than it being the cause.. difficult to tell for sure though.. I must fit a oil pressure gauge then I might have some early warning?

I had an MR2 Mark1 and then a Mark2 Turbo before I got into Scoobs,
agree with you that the Turbo has some wicked handling.. especially in the wet, lots of fun.. donuts were the normal weekly occurance.. sometimes on purpose

Hi Everyone

I was very pleased to see that there are some STI 1's about as well as mine and also how good they all look. I have got a MY94 which is No 197/200. I have had it nearly a year and am very taken with it. It has a Power Engineering T75 turbo back system and will shortly have the same firm's front equal length manifold when the weather allows me to fit it. The suspension has had the Power Station bump steer and full 4 wheel alignment. I cannot recommend this too highly-the handling is outstanding now, especially in the wet.

I think as someone said, this car will become a real classic eventually. I shall certainly hang on to mine, difficult to think of another car which would give me so much pleasure and it certainly has got real character. It may be of further interest that my friend also has an STI 1, The number is 134/200.

Hi all - Some updated pictures :-

Taken a few weeks ago, although the badge on the front grill has since been updated to the pink STI one. Car as at Well Lane rolling road on Sunday, where she produced 282BHP/270LB torque. Quite happy with that, standard power is claimed to be 250BHP and all I've done so far is add a full de-cat Mongoose exhaust.

Got an Apexi Power FC on it's way from Japan for her next !

Pictures look great Paul - those alloys look well clean!!

Its quite cool to see the little plaque pic, being mine is 25 and May.

I've got a problem - yesterday went over to my mums, drove like I an angel. Stopped car on her drive, then nice billows of smoke from the vents (you hear your cheque book commit hari-kari, and your heart stops). Can't locate it, but its looking down the left side at the plaque - no leaks I can see at all, just strong smoke smell and wafts of it. Can't think what it could be, although I do notice a power steering leak which may be leaking on the engine top and evaporating with the heat? (oh god I hope thats what it is!!). Anyway, need to get my car to my friend and try root cause it first, before bursting into tears anyway - heh, heh! Other than this occurance its going well. Birthday next week, so I'll get some money and pay for the bighter!

Leslie - any pictures of your and your friends car's - would be great to see them on here. If you dont know how to post them on the site, you could send them to me and I'll do it (I'll be quicker than I was with Dougie's ;-)

Turned into a good thread folks - need more piccy's of these STi'd gems.

See ya later folks,
Marky

Marky-san,

If the smoke is coming from the driver's side it is likely to be a rocker cover gasket leak onto the up-pipe or manifold. I had this on my WRX STI1 Wagon (63/200 June 94). I also had a slight leak from the power steering tank onto the top of the engine which would slowly cook the fluid there.

cheers,

Paul

Marky,

Sounds like the crank seal.. front of the engine, leaks and drips on the exhaust..

It is easy to change the seal, only you have to remove the cambelt and the crank pulley which is less easy etc..

Cost me 300pounds to fix mine including a new cambelt (at 100+vat) at a dealers..

The crank seal should be changed when the cambelt is changed but not many mechincs bother..

how many miles has it done?

Make sure you watch you oil level in the mean time..

Power steering leaks fairly readily in the hot weather as there is not enough cooling, I believe Scoobysport do a fix which is a longer pipe line that is run across the front of the radiator to cool the fluid. See if it continues to leak and if it has stopped then that is the steering fluid leak problem and stop worrying about it until next summer.. but unlikely that the steering fluid would drip onto the exhaust imho.

Cam covers do leak but you should be able to see the leak if you look closely enough, if you cannot see a big leak then my money goes on the crank seal.

Les, thanks for the photo's - ye another early Sti which is looking in remarkably good condition!! Any plans for modding the car, or are you happy with it as is?

No 63 of 200 - any ideas where the car went after you owned it?

Cheers folks for the recommendations for what my car problem is - I've not been brave enough to look under for that oil leak location - but from the short descriptions is sounds to similar to be anything else. Ah well, another potential £300 job in the pipeline - suppose if your gonna drive some jap exotica, then you gotta pay the price that comes as standard.

I'll let you all know come Thurs evening what it is - all donations should be sent to me personally LOL!!!

Thumbs up

Don't let them try and stitch you for 500pound as they tried with me..

If they go much over 300 for the estimate then ask how much a cambelt change is in the 450pound 45,000miles service..

Or shop around.. TSL gave me an excellent price for the job, I only went to my dealer in the end as they stopped talking silly money and it was nearer and gave me a car whilst it was fixed.

Hi guys,

Just spotted this thread, I had one of the originals (I think).
It was an STi1 Type RA. Not sure what number it was or whether it actually had a number. It was on a M plate.
Can't be any more help I'm afraid as I wrote it off 10 days after I got it
Driving an STi3 now.

Hi Marky

Thanks for putting my photos on the net for me-must find out how to do that! Nice to see my car in this thread.

As soon as I can fit the Power Engineering front exhaust manifold I will probably go for a TEK-2. I have no idea of my car's power output now but know that it is appreciably better than a MY98 standard model. It will be interesting to see what it is now. I have no plans to change the general appearance of the car away from original.

The drive back from an evening's Sea Trout fishing along our country roads with no traffic is something to look forward to as you can imagine. Even better on wet roads!

All cars welcome!! leslie - no problem with the pics ;-)

Hail hail - pity mate, you must've been gutted having that happen?

Arron - find out what you can mate about the car - it'd be great to start a register of the cars and track their whereabouts.

Anyone see the ltd ed Silver 4 door saloon WRX STi in this months Fast Car? It definately has a plaque in one of the picture, but no mention is made of the number at all - except that its any early one (very helpful). Looks well smart - alot of money spent on that one I reckon. Anyone know the owner/ car number?

It was my very first scoob, loved the fact that it was totally stripped, i.e. no AC/EW/ABS etc. It was a big fat engine surrounded by a shell

Marky, it had the same spoiler as yours, my current STi3 has the same spoiler as Jaay. I definatley prefer the earlier ones.

I think I still have some of the original Jap docs kicking about the house somewhere, i'll dig them out and see if I can get the no.

**Ahhh found the thread again!!!**
Guys, quick question - my early model on a M plate doesnt appear to have the STI / no of badge on the drivers side near the strut brace. It has all the other pink badges / bits and even pink stiching on gearknob, even has a sti logo on the speedo - have you seen / heard of any other cars like this - after seeing yours im wondering if mine is a genuine STI or not!!!!
Have been searching for further information but as you guys know finding details on these are like getting blood from a stone!!! - thanks

Folder mate, welcome back. Your car is probably an early version of the Sti from the production line. Just because it doesnt have the badging or plaque doesnt mean its not an STi - from what you describe it does sound genuine.

I'm trying to find some scans I made of an article from Haynes about the early cars - it has some good info in it.

Also, meant to say - had car at my mechanics house and he reckons my smokey/misty leak is power steering pump on the way out - the leak is a very visible sign that something is wrong with the unit. He couldn't see oil anywhere else.

He showed me the messy underside of the ps pump, the fluid leaks onto the engine top, then travels/spreads when I drive. Some drips are going down onto the exhaust manifold and burning off.

So - thats good I think. Need to check this under warranty terms and see if I get some £help fixing it. Anyone any idea on a power steering pump cost? Probably a hefty little item I reckon.

Drove home tonight and did 2 things in the car that I've not had a chance too. 1st was a nice power slide round a near 360deg bend dropping down onto a dual carraigeway - totally different to RWD Lotus Carlton sensation. The car is so well balanced!! Then at the traffic lights a Mercedes 320 summit decided he wanted a go - and still smiling I thought 'what the hell' - I left in 1st gear. Peace of poverbial p!ss. I've never done a take off from 1st gear (I love my clutch!!), but that was fantastic.

I'm so chuffed with myself. I'm going to try the same stunts tomorrow in my 1.1 Punto!!

Marky - thanks for the info. Scans of info would be good!, i had a simialr problem with mine a while back - plumes of smoke from under the bonnet, mine turned out to be a crack in the plastic t piece of the expansion tank (what the hose fits onto) - leaked a constant trickle of anti freeze onto the manifold - nothing to serious but scared me with all the smoke all the same!
Good luck with the powersteering pump.

Hi Marky

Saw yours about the oil leak. I had power steering fluid loss onto the engine top but discovered it was the fluid tank leaking. Mine is the older round tank of course and the construction is a top and bottom half staked together with an "O" ring as a seal. I took mine apart and re-sealed it as best I could. I eventually had to use some JB Weld to seal it completely. The real answer of course is a new tank if they are available. Well worth a careful check to see if it is the steering pump or the tank which is leaking before you get another pump.

Good luck with it
