VERY good point by MarkO - the women in the Soham case has not been charged with either murder or kidnapping - but perverting the course of justice - i.e. not being truthful while questioned. Through whatever misplaced loyalty she may feel for her boyfriend, she has tried to protect him. You or I may find that very hard to understand, but she has.

Now on the basis of what has been written on a lot of these replies, it appears that many people would have been quite happy for the police to have stopped and thrown her out into the crowd. Despite the fact that she *MAY* (and I stress may) not have had anything to do with the actual murders and hasn't yet been found guilt of perverting the course of justice.

If she had been 'thrown to the crowd' she would have inevitably been killed. Does that make those people any better than the evil sod who killed those kids? Who are we to decide who should live and die? I'm all for tightening up prison sentencing so that life will mean life with no parole etc, but using the death penalty? I don't think so.

Chris - mee now be very vbery drunk, but I'll do my best to spook unglesh in ure support

There can be no fair death penalty in any country in any society in any belief.. sp?

Say you are the executioner. You are tasked with gassing Ian Huntley. You do it well. In 5 years I find out I have cancer. I come forward and admit to the murders of the two innocent children. Huntley was nothing less than a freak, but had nothing to do with the murders. Now you have wrongly executed the wrong person, which makes you a murderer. We all know the penatly for murder is death...

Bring back hanging & public flogging.

Sell the rights on SKY TV & allow the public to bid for "birch strokes".

Any evidence to the crime & paperwork once convicted should be burnt to stop these silly paypouts after the event....

Make me a judge!!

I agree with death penalty if it is the right person,, but too many mistakes have been made in the past to ever take that chance.

Our laws are based on the principle that it is better 99 guilty men walk free than one innicent man is hung. You can never get away from that I don't care what the evidence.

And look at OJ, and other high profile cases in UK, are we saying you hang if your poor, walk if your rich?

No life should mean life, and anybody convicted of even the slightest child sex offence should be tagged for life. It may not have saved the girls but it would have saved Sahra Pane, if the police could have pin-pointed every sex offender in a 10 mile radious they would have got Whiting.

Perhaps what we should also look into is the reporting of such incidents by the media. The level of hysteria whipped up by the tabloid press is sickening. In fact reading the Telegraph this morning, police have serious doubts whether they can even bring a case against the guy because of the background reporting by the press. Regardless of your views on hanging, it is even worse that they might have to drop the charges.

All in the name of selling papers - great isn't it

aha
Finally we get to one of the main problems regarding this, and any emotive case concerning children, old folks etc. The Media!!

When we reach a stage where we can be whipped up into a frenzy by newspapers and television it starts to concern me that society has been dumbed down to the point of dribbling in front of the telly.

Some newspapers like The S*n, are the worst examples of how to sell papers without giving a toss about the consequences. As Chris said - a fair trial is all but impossible now after the reporting that has gone on. It's quite incredible that a paper as sleazy as this climbs onto its moral high horse (as well as the other tabloids) to promote outrage, followed by lynching, followed after a while by why did the police take so long, followed by what kind of a society do we live in, finally followed by did he really do it?
The other worrying factor is that the tabloids such as this account for 40% of papers read. As much as I'm against it, it sometimes makes a case for non-release of names until after the trial.

Did anyone notice that about 5 days after the girls disappeared, some poor guy got to watch his family being killed (wife and 2 kids under 5) by an apparently speeding motorist. So what is the big difference from the perspective of the people left behind. Given the choice I would rather lose one kid than my entire family. I don't mean too sound flipant, or belittle the pain that is being and will be suffered by the Wells and Chapman families, but it does seem that our feelings are being controlled by the media. Hype this one and suffer.... drop that one and forget.
Does anyone really believe that the loss suffered by the Soham families is better or greater than the loss suffered by Nick Wild's family? I don't think so... so where is the press now?????? Looking for the next heart string story as usual?
