Mike.

Mark's car apparently has 340bhp, which is only 20 over the real figure. Yet it gave me an extra 56bhp!
Then again, he does weigh 20 stone!!!

Question

If he put in Quaife box and wound the boost up to the same level as yours Mike what could he do the quarter in then?

Hi Mike,
Yeah I do know how a turbo works - I was just taking the **** again, but you may have missed it.
Not bad though 'cos you got the other 200 odd!

Dear Stef,
I did tell you you had a particularly good car!

Anyway a Scoob with 380 bhp would last one launch, as they have only got 6" diffs (As I discovered the other day off Mark at Santa Pod!), whereas on a 4x4 Cossie it is 1" bigger and as all you (4wd) girls know, size DOES matter (and mines 7½", but I want a 9" one!).

Dear Weaver,
The one from Oz sounds quick at 11.2s - so I would think he would achieve something like that if he could find something to cope with the gee-gees. That's the trouble when you increase the bhp, EVERYTHING else has to be uprated as well to cope....

Dear Craig,
That one was way over my head - DOH, thought you were being serious!

LOL
Mike

Dear Craig,
And you lot have the cheek to take the **** out of a Cossie whale-tail!

Dear All,
Hands up those who are going to Donnington on the 20th, so I know who to look out for (will recognise Stef and his cronies), but not the rest of you - perhaps you could post a brief description of your cars / number plates (so I know whose tyres to slash / let down!)....
See you there.
Mike

Steff,

Easy, no problem.I've just worked out that all I need to do, is stop the diet, and increase my weight to 40 stone.According to the site that will give me 382bhp.Or do you think weighing 40 stone will increase my 13.22 time ????.

It would be fun having some (lots) more power, I'll see what I can do.

Mike...

I think it was I who told you about the 6" diffs at the Pod... Even the WRC cars only use 6" ones... there isnt room to run any larger ones..

Anyways... road cars were never designed to be 1/4 dragged... the loading on the tranny and parts is to demanding (you should know that).

Mark (R19KET)... wanna borrow my boost controller ? lol *joke*

You guys are so lucky to have a nice little rivalry going on. Over here in the U.S., we can't even compete with the AWD monsters of the Eagle Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipses. There are a few of us with a Stage II turbokit from Minnam Racing in Canada that are hitting high twelves and low 13's in our Impreza 2.5RSs.

This is interesting because the 2.5RS only makes about 165hp stock. All we do is put a turbokit/intercooler, fuel controller, and add a fuel controller and we are getting low 13/high 12 second times. These guys are traveling from state to state and getting these times at the track. Most people over here are dying to have the turbocharged versions that you people have.

Why is it though that our measly cars getting times that are near the Imprezas you have? Is it the high compression ratio that our cars have? I am baffled.

Needless to say, I have a measly 2.2ltr Outback Sport with Autotranny that I am working on for speed. I have a non-intercooled aftermarket turbokit and I am tooling around with nitrous but haven't got it dialed in just yet. Looks like I'll be blowing my engine up soon...Oh well, hehe.

Sorry to ramble but I am just glad someone pointed out this site to me about an hour ago. Don't be afraid of the dragstrip guys! Mike, I would take you and your RS group on anyday if I had an Impreza over there. Damn! Arrrgh! Have fun!

Kevin,

You don't actually say what BHP the turbo charged RS's are producing.

I understand that the RS is very detuned, to conform to the US emission laws,2.5lt,165bhp ????.

Let us know what figures they are producing, maybe we'll all start getting the RS, and converting it.

Mark.

Be afraid - BE VERY AFRAID! I went to Santa Pod yesterday to try the welded "solid" diff AND I drove home (which felt very strange, I had to keep sitting 6ft off people's bumpers just so I didn't get withdrawal symptoms about being towed!)!

Posted some crap times due to the fact that there were SO many people there (big bonfire night thing the night before, meaning loads of "overnighters"). It was v.cold and you had to wait an hour between each run, which meant the tyres never got warmed up. Still managed to do several 13.4s and one 13.3, but still struggling with wheelspin (2.5s 60fts AGAIN!). I desperately want that elusive 2.1 or 2.2s time (and then to NOT miss third gear!), and I will get into the 12s again (at last), just don't know how to launch it, as the bigger turbo (up from 0.48 to 0.63 a/r) either gives me too much boost or bogs down. Hopefully next time there won't be so many people and I can put in a load of runss together to get the times down as the tyres heat up! See you there to kick your butts on the 21st....
Best regards
Mike

Dear Mike,
Ha, Ha, Ha The diff didn't blow but the driver's still slow
Seriously though you could try a launch controller from Racelogic that should help you get 60ft times you want. Plus you could get a quickshifter from them, that should help save a few tenths. Of course if you're really serious you could always get the ultimate upgrade.....a Scooby!

Mike..

Have you tried an EBC... this can be set to control boost at certain RPM ranges...so in theory..you can limit boost (wheel spin).. until the revs reach a certain point (or you press a trigger button). Then the boost can be obtained, either all at one, or gradually...

Just an idea to help you into the "12"'s...

Dear All,
Rest assured ALL will be resolved by next year! As I said, I have a few plans / upgrades up my sleeve....

However, thanks for the concern! Why don't you all come along on the 21st and we'll see what happens then.....

Dear Weaver,
Would love a Scooby - but don't fancy the sex change that you need for 4wd....!

Dear Craig,
At least I'm being honest and telling it how it is - I could have made up some bull about the diff instantly giving me 12s runs. I think lately the weather has been TOO good for turbo cars and has lost me time that way. All my previous best times have been on mild days where the water injection has had to come in straight away (meaning the ambient temp is quite high), and the track has been warm enough for sub 2.2s 60fts and sub 9s 1/8 miles!

Looking forward to "timing" you all round Donnington and hearing YOUR excuses!

Best regards
Mike

Mike,
Don't bother with a stop watch - it'll only make you feel more inadequate!
Unless you get an RS one which is probably 50% overoptimistic!!!

Dear Dave,
Laugh!.....(I nearly did!) Old Spice is for losers - Brute is what you want! A REAL man's smell - just splash it all over.....

I'm sure you think that Cossies are "old hat", but how many Scoobies can record an hour of engine information and down load it to a lap top; have the capability to run the ECU as an emulator (for live mapping), have an ECU that can control mappable water injection and still has a cult following after 14 years!?

Most "non-petrolheads" have heard of Cosworths - not that many have heard of Imprezas..... - Subaru's: "Isn't that what them Sheep farmers use to carry the bales of straw round in?" Is the usual answer!

Will see you there - just follow your nose to the naph eighties smell!

Dear Craig,
I think you're being conservative - most RS stop watches are 70% optimistic...!
LOL

Mike,

bearing in mind the cold weather is coming, may I suggest you next upgrade is a heated rear bumper, so that the next time you have to push it off the strip it keeps your hands warm (think they were standard equipment on later models)

What sort of times have standard escort cossies posted on the strip when you have been there? (or just limited mods, exhaust and filter?)

Mike, no, you're right, my scooby won't do any of that technologically marvelous laptop stuff...... but it will tan the hide off a Cossie on a b-road - even one with 1/4 mile straight bits. That's what matters.

As far as the man in the street not knowing what a Subaru is, what a fantastic situation. And for anyone who DOES give a s**t what Joe bloggs thinks, what could be worse than saying 'I drive a Ford Serria'!

Cult following ? Nothing to be proud off, all that brainwashing leaves you unable to see the true path.

See you at Donington!

Leave my little thread alone!
I reckon this could be an everlasting one considering it's name, and the amount of debating that we're obviously going to get through with Rainbow man!
Mike, just for comparison, these are the best times achieved by me so far at Santa Pod, though not on the same run.

Reaction : 0.404 secs
60ft : 1.722 secs
330ft : 5.395 secs
1/8 ET : 8.510 secs
1/8 MPH : 80.06
1/4 ET : 13.54 secs
1/4 MPH : 99.50

The first 1/8 mile of so appears to be uncontested Scooby territory. I'm so curious as to the performance of a 300bhp+ version.
Perhaps when my warranty runs out......
I may come down on the 21st and maul you off the line (you're words, not mine!).
See you soon.

Stef.

Dear Robski,
I think you'll find that it's been an optional extra offered by most tuners since 1986....

With regard to standard(ish) Escort times, you're looking at high to mid 14s or for a Stage 1 chipped car mid 14s to high 13s. For reference my car achieved the following times:
217bhp (standard) 14.835s @ 93.45 mph (25-Jun-95)

280bhp (Stage 1) 13.406s @ 105.05 mph (10-Sep-95)

350bhp (803 injectors, RS500 intercooler, Level 8 ECU, water injection, hybrid TO3B turbo (0.48a/r)) 12.892s @ 111.06 mph (06-Oct-96)

385bhp (As above but with hybrid T34 (still 0.48 a/r) and live mapped on engine dyno) 12.640 @ 115.96mph (20-Sep-98)

420bhp (400 injectors, inlet and exhaust cams, 7.7:1 cr, medium port "works" spec head, Isky valve springs, hybrid T34 (0.63a/r) and live mapped on engine dyno) 13.107s @ 108.06mph* (15-Aug-99 - Ultimate Fast Car 1999) *The reason for the low terminal is that I snapped the gear leaver off and had to go through in third on the rev limiter! (See our August Newsletter for account of the event -

Dear All,
So Scoobies are reliable are they?! I have just taken council from a fellow RS Owner (thanks Mike), and he has pointed me in the direction of your previous posting - DRIVETRAIN under the heading "piston slap"!

At least with Cossies it was only head gasket failures that were required to be sorted out under warranty and not FULL engine rebuilds! Funny how you all kept quiet about that one! I will be listening out for death rattles at Donnington! Not that I'm gloating or anything.....

LOL

Dear Weaver,
Give you car DOUBLE the horsepower and see how many bits last....

I think it would be a case of bye, bye pistons, bye, bye rods, bye, bye block, bye, bye gearbox, bye, bye transmission etc. etc. - whereas at least with a Cossie the ONLY thing that gives up is the diff (and only if you try doing standing starts)

Perhaps you'd care to come along to Santa Pod and put your car down the strip so that all us RS owners can have a laugh at how slow it is (despite having the advantage of girlie 4wd!).
LOL
