Mike,

You may as well be talking to a brick wall.

It seems some people can't appreciate that different people like different things. I own a MKIV Supra, used to own a RS Turbo and have several friends with Impreza's (Hence I know of this BBS). Whilst I'm thoroughly impressed by the Imprezza's cornering and wet weather ability it just doesn't do it for me. Four wheel drive just ain't my thing. Whereas my mate loves thrashing it through the lanes (if I'm a passenger I freely admit that I love it and never stop grining) I get my *REAL* buzz from big power and big speed, which is exactly why I bought the Supra. The thrust, the noise and the sheer excitment of having all the power going through the rear wheels is just fantasic. Great build quality, great handling (although they won't fit down country lanes!), great looks, bullet proof reliability and endless tuning potential. Suits me.

As for using the power available, well you've just gotta be carefull where you play....

Dear Nick, Dieter, Chrisp and Diablo,
I'm glad SOMEONE understands! Glad to see we are all different (yet the same - mad about cars!).

If any of you can make it to Santa Pod on Sunday, I would love to see you there.
Best regards
Mike
PS Robski, once my car is rolling NOTHING (that I have come across!) can keep up with it - it is 2wd so Santa Pod doesn't really do it justice, but out on the open road / track is a different matter, where its not just a case of "bye bye Gti", but "bye bye YZF750!" (identical from 70 to 120 but from 120 to 165 left him for dead (chin on tank trying his hardest!) - on the Autobahn of course.....)

Cool

Just thought I'd say hello as I don't like to think I'm not part of an interesting thread.

Hello.

If I can I'm going to rock up on Sunday as it sounds like a lot of fun!! In Australia they concentrate a lot on the 1/4 mile and I shall ask the WRX boys an idea of times and it will be interesting to see any discrepancies.

The fastest 1/4 mile time I've seen posted by a native WRX (as opposed to an STi) in Australia was 12.2 seconds but that was extensively modified (so it was probably closer to an STi).

Interestingly, I see an Australian company is touting a WRX with a 2.5 litre, turbocharged, engine conversion. It promises over 400hp. Might satisfy even you, Mike!

Benny.

Get down if you can mate. It's gonna be a great day, weather permitting.
I spoke to someone at 'Redline' magazine today who said loads of Novas are going too, which is a bit of a bummer (I like Novas, they just take up running time! ).
To be honest, 12.2 secs for a heavily modded WRX doesn't seem that quick compared to my 'standard' 13.5.
I'd like to see what these PE Phase 1 cars are capable of. Anyone bringing theirs?

Nick.
Noise? In a Supra?
I must admit, I've never been IN one that's accelerating hard, but all the Supras that ran at The Pod last time sounded very, very tame from outside. Just like the EVO IV and M3 that was there, quick'n'quiet! (If you can call 14+ secs quick! ).
See you all there.

Stef.

Im trying to pursuade some of the noisier Supras to come along so you can see what they 'should' sound like. Toyota did a great job of meeting noise polution laws throughout the world, but really made the car too quiet for most enthusiasts. Most people opt for the 5" tailpipe of the HKS Super Drager, which combined with a cat removal pipe pretty much turns it into a straight through system. Dont forget its a 3.0l 6cyl engine which makes a great noise if you remove the stock system.

Stephan,

A Supra with the factory exhaust is very, very quiet. I've got the HKS Hiper on mine which gives a nice burble on tickover that turns to a roaring howl on full throttle. The Dartford tunnel has never been so much fun!!!
It's a fantastic noise and that was with the cats in place. With the cats off....

HKS also do a race pipe for the MKIV but when I asked about getting one they told me not to be silly. They pointed out that it's a PROPER race pipe and as such is ear bleeding. Plod would hear you comming literally miles away.

My mate has the Hiper on his WRX and it sounds mental, combined with the sound of the SQV you don't need a stereo.

I'd trade it all for the noise of a V12 though....

Dear NickM,
Will you be coming to Santa Pod this Sunday to show the 4wd (boys!) what the 2wd (men!) can really do....?

Can't wait to see and hear some of the cars going, as you can't beat the warble of a flat four on song or the howl of straight through piped turbo car. See you all there (we will be in the cafe scoffing breakfst at about 9.30).
Best regards

Mike,

Belive me, I'd Love to but the bugger is I work in Rome!! I come back around once/twice a month but decided not to bother with this event because I thought the weather would be crap. Of course then there wasn't all this baiting going on and now I'm kicking myself because I want to be part of the fun!!!
It's a pain but I've gotta pay for my toy to be tuned somehow....

I'm not sure how many members of UKSUPRAS are going. I'll ask Branners as he's the man who organises the meets, track days etc.

One member has a 860BHP MKIV Auto.....

Nick

P.S. Do you know Jim Carter? I've never spoken to the guy but he lives at the end of my road and used to have a white RS500 with one or two modifications by Graham Goode Racing....

Dear NickM,
Shame you can't make it, as the weather looks pretty good on the long range forecast at the moment (although that will probably change!).

John should be coming as he is desperate to get a 13s run and to wreak revenge on the little Escort RS Turbo that beat him!

With regard to the guy who used to own the GGR RS500, I know of him (and the car), but have never met him. I understand the car was sold and I haven't seen it at any shows lately so don't know what has happened to it. Nice car, but don't believe the hype - the bhp was never proven and was just the usual GGR guestimate of what they thought it should be pushing out with those mods! (Although in reality their cars all seem to have a +15% power hike on the true figure - I'm sure you know what alot of these tuning companies are like!). In fact GGR don't like you taking the cars they have tuned to rolling roads, as they know they won't produce the quoted bhp.
See you next time perhaps.

Mike,

I heard that it was sold to an Arab that put it in his front room along with another concours condition Cossie, Escort I think. But then I hear alot of things, many of which arn't true!

If it is true then it's a waste in my opinion, hyped of not it was still a stunning car. I've never seen the point in concours cars but again each to their own!

I only believe a power figure when I see the dyno sheet, but even this isn't necessarly an accurate representation of the cars power and torque. There's FAR too much bull**** in the tuning industry and there probably always will be.

Anyway I'll shut up now, this is a Scoobie site afterall!!

See you at some future events.

Nick

Cool

From the WRX list...........

The quickest for a WRX in Oz is 11.3 secs @122mph.

That is quick!!

I'd like to come but I left Beavis alone Friday and overnight for a track day with a sitter and so don't want to do it again unless I can make a flying visit.

Laters

Mike,

regarding your quote "bye bye YZF750!", I was wondering if you'd raced any modern, quick bikes recently?
I'm sure you'll find plenty of R1 and Hayabussa owners who'll be willing to play. How about a supercharged ZZR-1100?

But I do see where your comming from. I do get a real buzz from riding bikes, its just that I need a 'sensible' form of transport, hence the boring, reliable japanese car.

Hope you have fun at SP,

Andy

Dear Andy,
Being a biker as well (ZZR1100), I know what I can and can't play with! But the only bikes that I have come across on the road so far (and beaten):
1. GSXR750 (Fuel injected model). This was a bit of a limp victory, because as soon as I started to pull away at 130+, he closed the throttle and backed off.
2. ZX6 - Three different ones, both chin on tank flat out trying hardest!
3. FZ750 - No problem (obviously!).
4. GPZ900R - Again no problem, but you should have seen his face as we came past him both at 155+ (another Cossie) with him burying his chin in the tank and trying to ring EVERYTHING out of it!
5. YZF750 - Stayed on his back wheel from 70 to 120 and then pulled out and overtook him from 120+ upto 165 with him receeding in the distance (chin still on tank - throttle wide open!).
6. Loads of 400s - No competition really, but they still try!
7. CBR900RR Fireblade - he did have an excuse though (which he pointed out at the time when he pulled alongside) - he had a tank bag on!
8. VFR750 - No problem, I let him overtke me first, where he thought that he had left me for dead, and then overtook him back at 150+...

They all acknowledge the victory with a big thumbs up and some of them you could actually see the corners of their mouths as they were grinning so much!

However, the most memorable one was with a tuned Fireblade (pipe and dynojet kit) when my car was just stage 1 (240bhp @ wheels). It was on the way to see the Superbikes and he pulled up behind me egging me to go faster (which I duly obliged) and I slowly (in those days) got up to an indicated 155 with him sitting two foot off my bumper, desperate to get past. I couldn't pull over, as we were going considerably faster than the cars in the inside lane (very early one Sunday morning), so I sqeezed over as much as I could to see how brave (stupid) he was! I suppose he had at least 8' between my car and the armco - and he saw what I was doing for him and went for it! He came past at least 10mph faster than me, and at that speed the fast sweeper of a corner turns into an actual bend. He actually got his knee down at 165mph with me staring open mouthed willing him NOT to fall off (or run wide and hit the armco). It still makes me sweat even now (five years on) when I think about it. We both slowed down after, and he pulled along side at 125, (which felt like a Sunday afternoon drive after having just held 155 for 3 miles!), put his hand up, cogged DOWN a gear and accelerated off again like I had just selected reverse...

Please note that I do NOT drive like this all the time, these are spread over six years of owning the car and I only exceed the limit in ideal conditions and not if I don't know the road..... Please don't try this at home etc.etc. I know its not big and it's definitely not clever. But it IS like a drug...
Sorry.

Mike.

Even spread over six years, I still wouldn't say that was any great record to have!
150mph, 155mph, 165mph!!!!!!
I guess that's one of the differences between the majority of the 'RS Crew' and most Impreza drivers, the 'racer' mentality.
I admit to having a couple of run ins with friends on their bikes, but we were not racing and on the roads in question you couldn't reach anywhere near those speeds.
We all let our hair down now and again, but I don't think keeping such a record of your 'victories' and then posting them will get you many brownie points.
Your car is very quick, there's no disputing that, but tell us these tales in the cafe!

Dear Steff,
I thought it a bit unwise to admit to, but by then had sent it... Rest assured it won't happen again Dad!

In the meantime, just watched Top Gear, and did you see the slating the Impreza got - only 5/10 for fun factor, due to the fact that it understeers all over the shop (no matter HOW Tiffany provoked it)! The winner? A 'K' plate 250bhp Evo 1 valued at £7k - now just mate the Scooby's exhaust note to the EvoVI looks and chasis and that would be the car I would buy.....

See you at the 'Pod.
Best regards
Mike
PS 172mph "True" speed recorded at Bruntingthorpe before I ran out of room (400 revs short of rev limit)......

Mike, you seem to go on a bit about how fast your car is yet you have only done a 12.64 1/4 mile time in it .I say only because the company demonstrator we have is a R5 GT Turbo which has also done a 12.64 1/4 @112.96 on road tyres.Bearing in mind this car is fully road legal, front wheel drive (bad traction off the line and wheel spins in forth gear) and 1400cc ,now thats what I call quick.See you on Sunday.

David MY99 Impreza.
P.S.I have heard that Fast Car will be there on Sunday.Baseball caps and loud stereos at the ready chaps!

Dear David,
But how many times has the car done a 12s run - two or three times (or perhaps just the once?). Whereas at least mine has just under thirty 12s runs (with ALL the timing slips to prove). All with 'only' 385bhp at the time and weighing a lot more than the *** packet that an R5 weighs! I here your car is 'supposed' to be 340bhp - giving you a power to weight ratio of getting on for 400bhp per ton! So you should actually be doing better than me (although I realise the fwd handicap....).
See you at the 'Pod to see what Roland has got up his sleeve now (I heard a stripped out racer type thing!).
Best regards
Mike
PS. All my 12s runs were also done on proper road legal tyres (Yokohama A520s) and not Avon road legal cut slicks that Roland had on the car when he did the 12.64s run....
PPS 340bhp through the front wheels - and I thought 420 through the rears was bad enough - you guys are mental!

Mike,

well done, I am impressed now that you have decided to impart those words of wisdom for us. I have obviously made a mistake buying an impreza and posting to an impreza bulletin board. I will go away so that the ford lovers can take over.

I am sorry that I have no tales of 150+ mph road races.

The one thing I am not sorry about is that your position as Chief boy for norfolk seems spot on to me.

Dear Robski,
Nice to see you are back. Obviously having left your sense of humour behind! As the saying goes, don't shoot the messenger, I just posted Tiffany's comments!

By the way, the Evo got NINE out of ten (just thought I would enjoy rubbing salt into your obvious wound!).

I love Scoobys as well, but I also like to playfully join in some banter with the Scooby boys (who I know will take it in the spirit it is intended). Stef will no doubt be the first to think of a reply that will poke some fun at the inabilities of the RSs (especially as he humiliates SO many of them on the road and track).

Lighten up! Or did I offend you THAT much in my previous postings just because YOU can't accept that it is "different strokes, for different folks"?

Why don't you come to Santa Pod with the rest of us - you never know, you MIGHT actually make some new friends!
Lots of love, hugs and kisses
Mike

Cool

Mike,

1) Tiffny can't drive
2) I've driven an M reg cossie which was a bag of nails and would be beaten in a top gear test by an XR3i.

Robski,

You're telling me that you've never exceeded the speed limit? Come on.........

In my book 40 in a 30 is worse than 150 along a quiet motorway.

Mike acknowledges he's mad

Talking

This is my first posting so I thought I'd join in the banter. I've been following the Scooby vs Cossie debate on both this BBS and the RS Owners Club BBS for a few weeks now and couldn't resist to joining in any longer. I agree with Mike people like different things for different reasons, fast in a straight line and straight on at the first corner for him . However I don't like all this 'Ohhh mustn't drive quick on the roads' stuff coming from the Scooby owners, hey if you've got a fast car then use it cos the way things are going we'll all have our toys taken away from us soon.
Cheers

Thumbs up

Yep Im back, been to some crap presentation in London for AXA, then to motorshow yesterday, that was much better, including getting on the P1 stand, but they guy with the keys had gone, so they couldnt let me in!

Mike, I give in, I cant keep it up any more, and my comments are starting to get taken wrong. I love cossies, I always have and until I ordered my scoob I WAS going to get one. Anyone who knows me knows that is true.
There were pros and cons for and against, but my biggest reason why I didnt was because as I have said previously, it has become hard to find a clean example, and when you do, they want silly money.

On speeding, I never conciously speed in an urban limit, and check my speed regularly to ensure this. But, I will never agree that 150 is reasonable on public roads. I honestly think that anyone who is doing this deserves to be banned, and do not care who wants to disagree with this. Those sorts of speeds should be saved for the track, or germany where people expect speed. Do I speed in 70s, 60s etc of course, within reason considering road conditions.

Am I a petrol head, oh god yes. Are my mates yes. Do we run modified cars? yes, in some cases mentally.

I cant make this weekend, as I have to go to Blackpool and even worse I am travelling in the ford! (its a 1.4 escort belonging to the missus), but I will attend some events soon.

Cyber "olive branch" offered (just in case there is any hard feeling or anything else)....

P.S.If we go head to head I'll race you to the 60ft light (in the Impreza obviously).

Dear Robski,
I was expecting you to have another rant, but was pleasantly surprised! Talk about attitude change - at last it appears that you can see we are just having a bit of fun (and to me, it matters not a jot what you drive as long as you ENJOY your self). Hopefully, we can bury the hatchet and all that (and not in each others' head!).

I agree with you that the good Escorts are over-priced and unless you have major money to spend, they are just as hard to tune as Impreza's. This is because although the engine is bomb proof (by comparison to an Impreza engine before anyone takes the wee-wee!), the drive train is as fragile as the Impreza's engine is weak. Throw anything more than 350bhp at it, and drive it hard (for an example of hard, watch Stef launch at Santa Pod - I have you on video as well Stef!) and the Escort Cossie gearbox will spit out the dummy (followed by the front drive shafts!). A semi-straight cut 1st, 2nd and 3rd with hardened 4th and 5th will cost you the best part of £2,500 and a Quaife one £5,000! And then you still have the front drive shafts and diff to do!

Haven't heard any transmission reliability problems with the Impreza's, but that might be because the engines can't provide the power / grunt (before going BANG!) to stress the running gear!

I would concur with you on the built up area speeding, where I will stick rigidly to the posted limits (and this is not just talk!). This is because these tend to be patrolled more rigourously and also by their very nature, tend to be heavily pedestrianised (and they haven't designed one yet that not only looks good as a bonnet ornament, but also bounces off unscathed on impact!). Because of this, it is just not worth taking the risks. However out here in the "sticks", we are blessed with open, sparsley populated roads most of the time, and it is only then (and when NO-ONE else is about) that I BRIEFLY give it some welly and then immediately settle back down to cruising speed. By doing it this way, I get my "buzz", and stay out of trouble, as it is the persistant speeders no matter what the conditions that are the ones to aim your comments at. Although I do NOT condone my actions, I do my utmost to minimise the effect it has on others....(Phew! Glad I got that off my chest!).

Dear Diablo,
All Cossie engines sound like that! Take them anywhere near the red bit and the engines sound like they are about to fall out. The only way to make them rev smoothly is to have them ported (like mine!), which allows mine to rev to 7200 (low by Impreza standards I know), but you HAVE to watch the rev counter or you will hit the rev limit in every gear...

Anyway ANYTHING would beat a big turbo Cossie in a top gear test (including a 50cc moped!). They have to have at least 3000 showing before they start to wake up and then they take off like a scalded cat (well, they should if running right!).

Thanks for the vote of confidence - mad, no just slightly on the de-ranged side!

Dear Weaver,
I usually have to take the corners sideways when the power kicks in! It's the Impreza's that understeer according to Tiffany.....

Dear David,
I have been following Roland's progress ever since he first appeared in the magazines. I like all forms of modified cars, especially the ones that produce the goods! And although there definitely is some bull****e flying around about bhp figures by R5 owners (just like the RS lot), you can't argue with that time! But out of curiousity - has he ever repeated it and has the car ever been properly dynoed? If the answer is yes - what were the figures in both cases (especially the torque)?

Best regards to you all

Thumbs up

Mike,

glad we have sorted that one. If you are ever heading down the A140 to ips...

robski

p.s. I must admit, the tea tray on the back of your cossies holds more mugs than the one on imprezas, so your fords our better than our scoobs on one point.
