from a mechanics point of view the repairs should be paid for by the supplying dealer the warranty company is not going to like paying for repairs that have been sold on the car (car should have been traded or repaired to a retail standard)need to wright a stiff letter stating that if repairs are not paid for legal action will be you only alternative, call the warranty company number normally on booklet cover abd explain how you think the dealer is selling vehicles which need repair work doing on the,and last of all are you sure that it is the valve stem seals normally give a puff of smoke when car is started after being run, needs a good looking at contant smoke normally means oil control rings have worn, let me know how you get on i have a 94 wrx ,possibly join the aa and use their legal service.

IanW - I spoke to them last week and essentially (although this is my interpritation) I was told it wasn't their fault.
wrxrob - I'm only going on what the garage whos looked at it for me are saying (they are the one recommended by warrenty company and my usual mechanic is going on holiday).

So, the car now appears to be ok.
Credit to the dealer who took it back and spent quite a bit of time trying to source a particular part (Lambda sensor) from many different places.
It would appear that when this is faulty it can cause the car to smoke after a prolonged run. I'm guessing this would be because the ECU is over fuelling the car and the extra mixture is not being burnt off? I'm no mechanic though.
Any how it appears to be ok now so I'm happy
Thanks to all who contributed.
