Back in the 80's, when the 16v versions of hot hatches were appearing, a few of my richer mates were all over them, and used to come down to Dorset from London to hill climb a certain road. There was alot of bragging over power outputs, which the Astra gte won hands down. But it was never quicker to the top of the hill amongst the Pugs, Golfs and XR3's, despite swapping cars. It couldn't get the power down in standard form, and that's what put me off them.
However, I can't speak, because I then had a Fiat Uno turbo as a company car, which was actually quicker than all of them, but only in a straight line, up to 50, and like sitting in a tin can. My memory is a bit hazy, may have been early 90's by then.

I think everything that was once considered fast was not that quick . Look at old Ferrari's posting 6&7 0-60 times..... My 4 door diesel Skoda does that

interesting that the astra gte was the quickest, I’m guessing there was not much in it from the cars mentioned, back during the 90’s when I was a teenager and bang into my cars i loved anything car which was the ‘sport Version’ even the Nissan bluebird turbo was fascinating lol...I Think my most fondest memories are of the cav Sri,gsi, turbo..nova gsi, gte, corsa gsi, asta gsi, gte, Calibre that era of cars, I don’t think anyone has mentioned a vectra gsi which I thought was fantastic, little bit afterwards I think the vectra may have been.

The Vectra replaced the Cavalier - more of an evolution than a revolution. When Top gear reviewed it they opened with a shed rolling down a hill in the background. The GSi looked nice with its Irmsher bodykit and Recaro seats and sounded nice. I drove several with a view to buying but it didn't really do it for me.

I have been lucky enough to own some lovely cars in my time, including an R32 GTR running over 800bhp that I used to drag race in the HKS Drag Series, but the one that really upsets me (as I sold it!!) was a Lancia Delta Intergale Evo 2. I purchased the car through a specialist and it was bought from a gentleman in Italy who had a private collection. It had only 7k kilometres on the odometer and still had the plastic on all the seats. I bought it in 2005 and sold it in 2008 and have regretted it ever since. I could've bought a decent house for the money low mileages ones are going for nowadays

My best time in the GTR was 9.8 1/4 mile but it swallowed money like you wouldn't believe. A set of plugs and some 102 octane racing fuel for a weekend wouldn't see much change out of a weekend away nowadays! There weren't a huge amount of differences between the EVO 1 and 2, mainly a catalytic converter, different turbo and different front seats. Mine was red but a guy a few streets away from me had a yellow one and I always thought it looked that little bit more special.

That was my biggest fear and one of the main reasons I moved it on, I didn't want to be hit with huge repair bills and it was getting more and more difficult to find anyone who would want to work on the car. I didn't realise quite how sought after they'd become otherwise I would have made more of an effort to maintain her at the level she was accustomed to! Hindsight is a wonderful thing!

I went to view one a few years back ( highly modded track car ) ...but was too track focus for my liking as i like to drive it now and then
Had a chances to buy the Lancia Stratos in the early 90s for only £10k ....deffo miss a bargain there , what a car for the money !!

Thinking back i could’ve used my fiesta rs turbo as one of those artificial smoke machines you see at discos, it use to clog the street up first thing of a morning but I still loved it lol
