car wont start after sitting for 1 week
Yes you can connect it whilst still live. If you're fitting the terminals to the battery then just make sure the charger is not plugged in while you're doing this.
When they say don't extend the wires they mean between the charger itself and battery as they will increase in resistance and get hitter during the charging process. You can use a mains extension cable no problems though.

i still havent started the car yet because of mu shoulder/arm problems. i have got more movement now so will be connecting this up later this week hopefully. i plan on connecting it up,closing the bonnet and locking the car whilst it charges would that be ok? dont really feel comfortable leaving it overnight unlocked. car is outside.
The connectors can sit flat connected the terminals. The charger itself I put out of the way on the other side of the engine bay next to the ABS, that way you know its no where near the bonnet.
I always loop the wire round somthing solid under the bonet if its outside aswell, as I worrie about some turd having a pull on the wire and causing a spark at least then it will pull where it is looped and not pull on the terminals
