Another piece of simplistic mythology.

btw, it wasn't close to 'all' our gold reserves, and it's an almost insignificant amount compared to our debt and deficit.

This happened between 1999 and 2002, yet this is constantly repeated as some sort of defining policy of the Labour government

yes, because the deficit was so high after labour borrowed and spent so much.

we are still in deficit, just not as much as we were, once that is turned around we can start to clear the debt, but it will take years if not decades.

It was about half, which is a pretty substantial amount. There's also nothing mythological about it. Bearing in mind he was previously the chancellor so well up to speed on working with numbers and figures, makes it even worse.

Tell you what though, if Labour do get into office, I'd like to put Dianne Abbott forward for the position of chancellor, she's great with numbers!

The deficit was high for lots of reasons (some the government's fault, some not), it's pretty simplistic to say this was all down to Labour.

If it was easy to balance the books I'm sure the Tories would have done so after 7 years in power. Of course they haven't, in fact the deficit has been higher on average than it was under Labour.

So not 'all' then

The gold was sold off between 1999 and 2002. When he was chancellor

The country needs to keep its belt tightened until the deficit is overcome, then start bringing down the huge debt. If that takes decades, so be it. That will be the legacy for our children and next generations. We cleared the debt!

Did it twice. Lib Dem first time by some margin and then Labour with Lib Dem close 2nd. Tory near last which is funny because I had always intended to vote Tory.

I've warmed to Comrade Corbyn over recent weeks. Labour was close to implosion and the election has pulled them back together, Abbot aside. May has been truly awful. Not appearing to debate Corbyn in public smacked of arrogance. Even the Welsh Tory guy didn't bother to turn up.

I agree income tax should rise. I actually think National Insurance should be binned and just raise tax to compensate. I didn't like the corporation tax increase but for small business such as mine it will be 21% under labour, not 26%. It will mean no reduction to 17%.

I'm in fairly safe Tory seat in West Wales (Little England) yet Wales will probably end up Labour. Schools and NHS are in an appalling state so I'm not convinced a Labour overall government will make any difference. Will Labour bloat public sector middle management, again. Will Tories allow Tesco Hospitals? Bring back grammar schools which sounds great but what about the schools for kids that don't get in? Pretty much day release Borstal?

Will Lib Dem be a wasted vote? Can Diane Abbott really be trusted? At least Boris shows glimmers of intellect. Honestly not sure until I get in the cubicle. I take they won't want a sample too?

Well if this SN poll is representative of the country then it seems the Tories are on course for a landslide.

That's assuming that the 50% who indicated a Tory vote don't all live in the same town, are the same age etc

Anyone get the feeling that Facebook is swamped with pro labia messages?

Perhaps I just have communist friends?

i was just glad the Tories were bottom of my list. The shame if they were any higher.
Does it not show how much the lines between parties are becoming blurred as they each lean abit more to one side and the other to grab a few extra votes?

No - lots of social media 'Bots' have been spewing out Labour posts, which are then re-shared - my Facebook has been full of them too.... plus most Facebook users are a youngish demographic which tend to lend themselves to labour polices.... so amplifies it again.... they reckon social media bots have been a big thing in this election - I must admit I've really noticed it, esp Pro Labour/Anti-Tory.

I'm often on another forum overclockers, and there is a thread started just after the election was called with a poll showing a healthy win for the Tories. Another thread was started in May with a complete turn around and Labour walking it.

I appreciate it's only a computer forum but it's interesting to see how things changed.

I've seen one person say they are voting Tory and another voting Lib Dem.

I've had endless "save us from Tory rule, vote Labour" posts and memes. Funny really as I've had just as many memes regarding Go Diane yet the very same posters seem to think voting Labour, and thereby giving her an actual office in government, is a great idea.

One question - is NHS and Education devolved? I only ask because Wales AFAIK is Labour and even though I live in a firm Tory area the schools and hospitals are a complete mess. So is that the fault of the Tories in my constituency, Labour being the majority party of Wales, or the Tories of Westminster?

It is in no way and easy task who ever is in power, labour made it so much harder by borrow so much.

To be honest I voted for the best option for brexit, corbyn has already said that he'd bend over and take it up the a** so that in my books only leaves one alternative, the best of 2 evils I suppose :/

The best deal with the EU is for many generations to come, governments can be sacked every 5 years

Yes it's a shock that a right leaning community, predicts the results well when the 'right' do well in the polls - duh

I honestly think whoever wins won't have that much influence over the deal. The EU has already decided for us. Tories won't really go for no deal. It's a bluff to win UKIP votes.

I might call you on that. I think Theresa WILL go for no deal if they get arsey.

She'd love to be a second Maggie, hopefully without the spite against the working man.
