My valved setup on the dyno @ RCM:

And then at Santa Pod:

All I want to change is the tailpipes, bit small for my liking. Area52 are the ones who made it for me.

Yeah there won't be a price as this was custom - one off.

It wasn't cheap that's for sure. But I had a full turbo back setup done by them.

No difference in power open or closed. Use a fob to open and close the valves (there's two valves).

I'm undecided whether to get some genuine STI back boxes. They can be bought new but near a grand just for the boxes.

Using the Japanese auction sites I think they can be had cheaper. The shipping costs are a bit of a put off.

Lots of interesting stuff on there.

I was looking at an STI backbox too, the primary benefit being that they retain the Subaru warranty.

I found precious little footage of them though, and the ones I did find were poor quality so you cant really pin an at least £750 purchase on them.

I wouldn't bother to be honest, you may hear a bit more noise in the cabin but that's about it.

Not meaning to sound harsh but, why on earth is anyone still buying a time bomb car? This has been going on for a decade. Out of principle, if not for the potential problems the Impreza should have flopped.

That's the funny thing really, even knowing the issues and having owned 2.5 engine Subaru's for 10 years now I'd probably still buy a new one if I had the chance! Funny really.

It's like the choice of an attractive woman over a dead plain one with big belly and small man sized bum. In other words it's love.

Like any car really, most have issues of some sort or another, unless its some highend model with forged internals from the factory. As i've mentioned before, the focus RS has much worse issues going on for example with the block distorting after a heat cycle, losing all its coolant, popping the head gasket etc was supposed to have been cured in the very latest models by Ford, but I'm not convinced. Guy I know bought a new 2017 RS and the engine started misfiring then eventually popped with this issue after 6months! Complete new engine required. People are still buying them though.

Anyway that's what your warranty is for. Also mines currently on 20K, zero issues. So my "bomb" hasn't exploded or showing any signs of doing so yet

I guess for those buying new it isn't as much as a concern - although didn't Subaru start turning down warranty claims for engine issues? Admittedly I have a real soft spot for the Impreza and would have gone for a hatch if it wasn't for the issues. I looked long and hard for a S-GT but non came up when I was ready to buy.

Or nearly new 2nd hand cars which would have the balance of the warranty left....

For some cases yea, probably because the owners had frigged around with them before the failure, yea yea i know that wasn't always the case, probably put the wrong fuel in too but this was back in 2008/09 when the problem affected lots of cars due to the crappy maps Subaru put on the STi hatches. The headgasket issues were also down to poor manufacturing/tolerances not being followed which was remedied pretty soon after. Btw the new ones aren't called an impreza anymore they dropped the name.
