Well not much has changed on here - a few trolls have been permabanned, a couple of muppets have replaced them, Brexit and Trump are discussed more than Subarus...

Been looking out for you on WSM. :D Felt bad for Thor last year. So close - just lost it on the Kettlebells.

You've done well to last so long without being tempted back to Subaru ownership. Did you get an X5 in the end?

Tidgy 11 April 2017 09:30 PM

as said same old piss poor engine

Yeah had an 05 x5 sport, loved it but had to sell to raise money for house deposit.

Thor will win it one day :)

Given the price of them you could easily pick up a widetrack/hawk spec c and not loose any money on it :thumb:

Where's the fun in that? I like the lottery you get not knowing if it's going to fail at any moment.

The trouble with that is the edge is about as wide a a 2.5 piston ring land :D

I tried to find a couple of deals a few months ago for the new STi but they where coming back quite expensive for a car thats not a patch on its rivals(reviews suggest this), as a comparison I got offered from a dealer a brand new Audi S3 S Tronic for £31,493 and Kings Lynn subaru where the cheapest on the new STi at £30,280!!:wonder:

A £1,200 extra over the STi and you get a Audi(if your a badge snob) and a faster car with comfort and a great gearbox with a bullet proof engine, I just cant justify a Subaru STi anymore which is a shame as I have loved Subaru ownership over the years.:(

the shreksta 02 July 2017 02:43 PM

so after much brain ache i have decided that it is a wrx sti im after, i have read that there are some changed in the pistons etc which is a bonus, the car wont be tracked so around 350bhp will be plenty for a fast road car.

any other things i need to look out for?

Andycat 02 July 2017 03:59 PM

My mates thinking of one too..... Any of the uk new shapes gone pop so to speak yet ? ie engine rebuild?

mikejenkins 02 July 2017 04:22 PM

There is one with engine failure on eBay at the moment (not sure of the circumstances).

Matty81 02 July 2017 05:24 PM

I'd have a new one they are nice.

EddScott 03 July 2017 11:37 AM

I'm just under 3 months and 2.5K into ownership of a new STI.

Personally, I'm very happy with it. On the school run there's a white S3 and yes, it's nice but has very little presence. I race RC and there is a guy who swapped an RS4 for an S34 saloon and we kind of got them at the same time and most walked past his to look round mine :)

I've been around the houses this morning for different things - the Subaru dealers for some service work and stood chatting to mechanic dude for ages about them. They've sold 4 in the last couple of months which isn't bad considering no one apparently wants them anymore. Bodyshop place as there's some light scratches to one of the doors and one of the lads has a widetrack and we chatted for ages. My favoured indie garage who races Cosworths and does lots a rally/race prep. Had a good sniff round and liked what he saw.

None of the above has anything to do with ability and everything to do with car people liking a nice car.

It's quite spacious inside and easy takes 2 adults and 3 kids with 30mpg to Oxford and the Cotswolds. Not particularly tiring on a long drive. Seats are comfy if not as cool looking as Recaro CS. The stereo is admittedly a POS. If I could be bothered I'd change it for something aftermarket.

I alternate between the STI and an old 03 Mini cooper. I like leaving the STI for a week or so and I really get the feeling of having something special when I haven't used for a while.

Cambs_Stuart 03 July 2017 03:10 PM

It'd be interesting to see how much a 3rd part warranty quote for a 2014 wrx sti would be compared to an M series BMW or s-series audi.

Matty81 03 July 2017 04:45 PM

2.5's aren't the only Subaru engines with problems. I know someone who has a classic and had to break it because it wouldn't stop smoking.

The car or the owner?

That was probably just high mileage wear though. If a 2.5 engine ever lives long enough to wear piston rings and start smoking it'll be an achievement! :D

Matty81 03 July 2017 05:04 PM

All cars are the same, his classic wasn't even high mileage. No engine is bulletproof.

BrownPantsRacing 03 July 2017 05:10 PM

You won't find a marque that doesn't have it's issues. Go onto any forum and ask and you'll find reported weaknesses with any engine. Some manufacturers acknowledge and fix the issues though, albeit rare.

lewis87 03 July 2017 06:05 PM

If I had the money i would get a new STI over the competition, not everyone aspires to own a "prestigious" german car.

Matty81 03 July 2017 06:20 PM

I do like mercs now. Out of all of the German manufactures I'd have a merc definitely. But audi's and bmw's bore me. New type r looks lovely.
