Well not much has changed on here - a few trolls have been permabanned, a couple of muppets have replaced them, Brexit and Trump are discussed more than Subarus...
Been looking out for you on WSM. Felt bad for Thor last year. So close - just lost it on the Kettlebells.
You've done well to last so long without being tempted back to Subaru ownership. Did you get an X5 in the end?

Yeah had an 05 x5 sport, loved it but had to sell to raise money for house deposit.

I tried to find a couple of deals a few months ago for the new STi but they where coming back quite expensive for a car thats not a patch on its rivals(reviews suggest this), as a comparison I got offered from a dealer a brand new Audi S3 S Tronic for £31,493 and Kings Lynn subaru where the cheapest on the new STi at £30,280!!
A £1,200 extra over the STi and you get a Audi(if your a badge snob) and a faster car with comfort and a great gearbox with a bullet proof engine, I just cant justify a Subaru STi anymore which is a shame as I have loved Subaru ownership over the years.

so after much brain ache i have decided that it is a wrx sti im after, i have read that there are some changed in the pistons etc which is a bonus, the car wont be tracked so around 350bhp will be plenty for a fast road car.
any other things i need to look out for?

I'm just under 3 months and 2.5K into ownership of a new STI.
Personally, I'm very happy with it. On the school run there's a white S3 and yes, it's nice but has very little presence. I race RC and there is a guy who swapped an RS4 for an S34 saloon and we kind of got them at the same time and most walked past his to look round mine
I've been around the houses this morning for different things - the Subaru dealers for some service work and stood chatting to mechanic dude for ages about them. They've sold 4 in the last couple of months which isn't bad considering no one apparently wants them anymore. Bodyshop place as there's some light scratches to one of the doors and one of the lads has a widetrack and we chatted for ages. My favoured indie garage who races Cosworths and does lots a rally/race prep. Had a good sniff round and liked what he saw.
None of the above has anything to do with ability and everything to do with car people liking a nice car.
It's quite spacious inside and easy takes 2 adults and 3 kids with 30mpg to Oxford and the Cotswolds. Not particularly tiring on a long drive. Seats are comfy if not as cool looking as Recaro CS. The stereo is admittedly a POS. If I could be bothered I'd change it for something aftermarket.
I alternate between the STI and an old 03 Mini cooper. I like leaving the STI for a week or so and I really get the feeling of having something special when I haven't used for a while.
