So the UK has to pay for the French police and security now. AFAIK we paid for the fence and CCTV already round Calais port. I have also seen reports of French police just standing on the beach watching people get into small boats. I also read an article yesterday that said if the small boats are offered help but refuse then under the law there is nothing the French authorities can do to stop them leaving.

They just wait until they get to the middle of the channel and get the UK Border Force to pick them up.

I can't see this deal changing anything as the French don't want them any more than we do so why would they stop them from leaving France in the first place?

https://news.sky.com/story/sunak-say...rance-12746975

"Maritime law dictates that only vessels or passengers in distress receive assistance from the coastguard on patrol. And it seems that this boat has refused help. All the French authorities can do is trail behind until the dinghy arrives in British waters."

You would have thought though that a criminal offence being committed would superseed any maritime law. It seems to work ok for the Navy boarding drug smuggling boats and then sinking them.

It doesn't have to at all, it's just choosing to, because our govt has decided it prefers that option over investing more in processing/evaluating asylum claims.

The US should be compensating on the basis of its destruction of Libya and Syria

because this is the reason for the desperation / migration

Is it me, or have the Brexiteers on here gone very quiet lately?
Why are they not here telling us how wonderful the sunlit uplands are?
How fantastic it is now that we have taken back control of our borders?
How our fishing industry is now booming having taken back control of our fishing waters?
How our farmers are benefitting from the slashing of all that red tape?

They will back in two terms time; after the Tories lose the next election and Labour lose the one after that...

Awkward:

Wish they could have put the UK in there so we can satisfy the medias thirst of proving how sh*t things are.

Google is your friend! Child poverty in the UK is around 22%, up from around 20% last year. Slightly below the EU average according to that article, but of course the measures may be different so a direct comparison is difficult. The worrying point is the increase in child poverty, which is only likely to increase as the effects of Brexit become more acute!

I suspect this has a sizeable amount to do with covid mandates

it has only increased the divisions between rich and poor

more than possibly on purpose

That's what Brexit was all about! All the racist anti-immigrant bull was just to get the sheep to vote for it! As you can see, immigrant numbers haven't fallen, there are just more brown immigrants now rather than EU immigrants!

Think it may be time to move my savings out of the UK, just need the £ to recover a bit!

Another BREXIT success story.

"Two years past Brexit and we now live with the reality that the way the rules are interpreted can change from one day to the next."

Christmas was a joy for me a very small business occasionally selling to the EU as 'Can't be arsed' was added to the rejection reasons used by customs. 'Can't be arsed' was previously reserved for customers.

I'm still bitter.

That one sat since November at Belgian customs then returned to me with no contact to the customer and no reason stated. As that's the case - and not the usual customer refusal due to Brexit tax - I can't charge for the postage so bigger loss.

A huge Brexit benefit... for the rest of the EU! So much for the EU collapsing in the wake of Brexit, rather the opposite is happening and the EU is more popular than ever!

Not unexpected.

I remember one film crew interviewed two old ladies in the street, who said that they voted yes as a stand against the government.

When pressed they didn’t understand what the vote meant.

They are probably in the top 10% of that list.
