If you are intending to run a VF35 and stick to a relatively cost effective build - basically upgrading a WRX engine to STi spec and aiming for 350bhp (in an ideal world), then I find it hard to justify the expense of a 6 speed conversion. Sure, the 5-speed may be borderline and it would be nice to have piece of mind but if I'm spending the thick end of £2k in having a 6-speed fitted, it seems daft not to make the most of it and build an engine capable of 400+. But that then becomes a whole magnitude of expense greater than a simple OEM bolt & map job.

Even if you want to push past the power levels of a VF35, how many second hand 5-speed boxes would you have to go through before a 6-speed becomes cost effective?

I think that there is a serious level of financial commitment required if you want go bigger than a VF35 and retain reliability.

Yeah sound advice there pritty much the conclusions I have come too Fter all my digging! Going to go down the VF35 route for now and keep the 5 speed as long as I can. With a blast plate and treating it nicely it should hold up at 350 for a while!
