Awesome thread, Daz! I am new in this forum and this is literally the first thread I read. I already love the forum
I have an 1995 STI that I want to make better in pretty much every possible way. I want to remove the rust and to make it perform better. Just bought a 6-speed transmission for it. Originally I wanted to give it to a mechanic, but reading your thread, I am seriously starting to think I should personally do everything in my garage, even though I have 0 knowledge about cars in general. Will see which way to go. Good luck to you in hitting the 10.5, man! You really inspired me !

After the failure I bought myself a brand new audi so have been driving that for the last few years. Its spoilt me because driving the Impreza now has made me realise how bad the 300,000km suspension is so I addressed that this week.
Bought myself a set of KW Clubsport 2 ways to go on it. Haven't had a chance to set them up properly yet but first impressions are pretty good.
They also look awesome!!
Sits well now too.

Well I'm pretty pleased with myself on this one.
Ever since I've had the Impreza back together I've had an error with it and the adjustable differential hasn't worked. I didn't like the way the car drove as it felt proper tail happy all the time.
Anyway after a bit of research it turned out to be a steering angle sensor.
Quite an expensive part. When I took the car apart I made the mistake of not securing the steering wheel. The wheel spins past a point of no return and "breaks" the sensor. It can't be reset by subaru so the sensor is effectively junk and requires replacement. Which is bloody expensive.
Anyway me being the tight arsed nerd that I am didn't want to spend that money so I did some research (ok I googled) and stumbled across a forum post that pointed me in the right direction ( thanks James if you're reading this).
Found out you could actually reprogramme the Chip on the sensor with an EEPROM programmer.
So £50 on amazon and 24 hrs later I've managed reprogramme the small microchip on the board and have only gone and fixed the bugger and saved myself about £600.
Result!!

Good old motorsport premium averted today.
I have a twin plate clutch that has an AP racing Hydraulic release bearing which has a slave cylinder and bearing. Anyway after years of use the bearing has failed and needs replacement.
After lots of phone calls to various AP Racing Dealers no one had stock. Managed to contact AP racing themselves who quoted £127+vat and a waiting time of 8 weeks!!
Anyway after posting my dilemma on Facebook someone tipped me off that under a removable cover I'd find a standard off the shelf bearing. ( Thanks Andy).
So I managed to get the cover off and find a part number.
Ordered yesterday and arrived today, problem solved for the grand sum of £12

Well somehow I've managed to avoid disaster and after some time away from the car I've managed to get it up and running again.
The problem was with a water pump bolt that had threaded. Anyway I bought a helicoil kit but the m6 failed and because of the way the bits were laid out in the box I picked up the m10 instead of the m8 and drilled an m10 hole which didn't leave much meat on the block for sealing.
Anyway I decided to put an m10 stud in that hole and drill the water pump to suit. This has worked and has sealed and is not leaking.
The next issue was that I stripped down the block in the first place because it sounded like the bottom end was on its way out. Anyway as the engine was apart I decided on a new crank, some new rods ( manley turbo tuff i beams) some new bearings snd RCMs high grip tensioner.
Anyway after I got it all back together the noise ( that sounded like the bottom end) was still there. It was at this point I was going to break the car.
Anyway after talking to a very good friend of mine, who owns his own garage, about the car he asked me to take him out in the car.
He diagnosed the issue straight away.
Turns out that the CP pistons I'm using are just a bit noisy. He said he had the exact same issue with a set that he had on his 750bhp MR2 which at the time was one of the fastest in the country.
He asked what pistons I was using and when I told him i was using CPs he laughed and told me I had nothing to worry about.
Anyway, there's a thousand miles on this new engine now and other than this slight noise the car has been faultless.
Another thing that proper annoyed me with the car was that I was really disappointed with the KW Clubsports. They were crashy as hell and no matter what I did with them I just didn't like them.
Anyway I decided to look at the spring rates on them. 9kg/mm on the front and 7kg/mm on the rear. I've swapped the 7s to the front and bought some 5s for the rears. It's totally transformed the car. Some additional adjustment, (three clicks harder) on the rear and the car is now absolutely planted. I cannot believe a simple spring swap has made so much difference.
So long story short, it looks like the car is staying.
Well until the next time it breaks.

This threw me because the noise is always there although it does get quieter once the engine warms up.
Not sure what it can be if its not piston slap because I've replaced everything.
Either way the car is as quick as its ever been as the owner of an R35GTR found out earlier
