Talking of aerating lawns I bought a pair of spiked shoes a few years ago

"do they work" I hear you ask

Not as well as I had hoped - would be my reply

But they do provide my wife and children with some amusement when I use them!!!!!

Lovely! We're planting an apple tree shortly, not sure about raspberries though. The plum tree was heavily pruned this year and didn't produce much fruit so looking forward to next year's harvest. Who's cooking the crumble?

Hannah, my wife

We are taking it to lunch

Our old family friends (Mojo an Patsy) are having a good bye lunch for their eldest son Félix

Who goes to Oxford tomorrow

Moj and Patsy are fantastic cooks and I believe we are having pork belly

They also serve great wine

What about you

Doing a few hours work today then church at six before going home for roast chicken cooked by Lizzy. No wine, though.

Pork belly sounds good; one of my favourites!

I've had the sprinklers on all day and it's greened-up nicely. Bought a Hayter Harrier recently and I'm teaching myself lawn finishing:

This little strip needs some water and some iron sulphate, but the stripes are getting straighter.

Not on the strip above, but I do sometimes use Aftercut which gives a nice green-up. I used Evergreen 4in1 once on the big lawn and it was ok, but I think I will get better results using dedicated products and the kind of long-term treatments I've had carried out above (scarification, aeration, overseeding, top-dressing). As an example, I don't intend to use any fertiliser on the main lawn because I feel the roots will be stronger if they're allowed to form naturally.

P.s. Don't use Aftercut now, it's high in nitrogen and should be used in the spring.

After a strict watering regime and unseasonably warm and sunny weather there's been a growth spurt:

'like'.

Lizzy chose a decent looking lamp, James. Only Aladdin is missing now.

Early spring and the lawn's starting to look lush. A few weeds and some moss have crept in over the winter, but overall it looks healthy. It's had a couple of very light cuts and has just had the Evergreen 4 in 1 treatment.

Developed a bit of a thing for lamps. Somebody gave me a tatty old paraffin lamp the other day that I’ve cleaned up. Nice new wick and it fired up giving off a pleasing glow.
