You'll be doing them an injustice if you don't try Sharps Pilsner

I tried Sharps Atlantic on your advice, it was nice. Probably prefer it actually to Doom Bar, it was exactly as you said, a halfway house between ale and lager. Wanted to try some Pilsner but my Tesco didn't have it. I'll have to try somewhere else

I think Doom Bar is very overrated

they do much better beers imo, when you got to the factory shop you can get it all in 4ltr kegs

It was the beer that made them a big name so I think they flog it to death.

They do a few posh beers too; all strong, all expensive, some quite nice.

yeah, it is good marketing

and not a bad break either, especially just of the old lifeboat station on an incoming tide

but I prefer the Atlantic, or Coasters

mmm, doesn't surprise me TBH

I never liked it (in bottles) - I always thought it tasted a bit bland and in a way a bit "corporate"

I'd call that "driving beer."

Lidl's Gallereux is really good; 5.2% but light tasting and really nice. I've converted loads to it!

Cool

In fact, if you are anything like 8-Ace — an alcoholic comic-strip character from legendary juvenile British magazine "Viz" — all eight cans are to be drunk on the way home from the corner shop where you bought them.

Thanks. I'll be doing some more tasting over the weekend as I need to make my mind up pretty soon.

Quite a few beers have been mentioned that aren't lagers ie doom, Sam Adams etc. Are these like lager ie fizzy and served cold or are they flat and served at room temp?

Ales are served a little cooler than room temperature. Light/pale ales are almost fridge cool, lagers are served properly cold.

Some people insist ale should be room temperature but it's hard to work drink. And seems to rot your guts even more. My post ale drinking farts are enough to clear an entire village.

Everybody carries their own supply of lager in their bladder at all times. However, if your guests must drink it as well, my wife reckons this is good:

If you can find it, samichlaus is one of the best i've tried.
