Used to be smoke break every hour or so until he was told enough was enough, and of course that was a fault
Yes smoking is a big problem for me, its not the physical act I object too, it's the fact that most smokers seem to think they have extra rights over others - they don't.

In fact I have recently learnt that it is perfectly acceptable to advertise that you will not employ smokers.

Someone did a study a few years back that revealed the staff that tends to turn up late then go on to be the most productive people for the rest of the day.
There was more to it than that but equally strange, the point is though, some people turn up late, some smoke and some go on SN on their phones all day.
I personally never used to mind if my lads turned up late and they knew it so would often take advantage, when they were there they would work hard and do a honest job, personally I couldn't care about 10mins here or there in a 8/9/10 hour day.
Modern kids don't respond well to old fashioned ways and values IMO.

Are now see this could be something, you're not a grumpy pants are you. I used to go to McDonald's and buy the staff dinner once a week and on sunny days get them a bottle of beer each and maybe some ice creams.

Yep, do all that. Barbeque's on nice days, box of magnums from the shop, go home an hour early when it's quiet. Give them lifts home after work, free bar at the Xmas party.

The problem is some staff see this as you wanting to be their friend, when you then try to discipline them for whatever reason they get the hump.

I'm struggling then, seems like a good job for a good guy and decent money for very little hours with a chance of a pay rise.
Ungrateful bเstเrds.

I don't mind guys turning up late, infact we say to people that's its ok to turn up late, or go early - just not every single day.

Add smoking - if you choose to smoke then fine, don't expect to be given 60 - 90 minutes of time a day to go smoke.

Punctuality is a basic requirement. If an employee cannot manage their time/life in order to be somewhere for a specific time then that slackness may permeate other areas of their conduct. Where were these cushy jobs when I started working?!

Indeed.
Certainly didn't exist when I started working.

I have no problem with people turning up late every now and again, things happen, we are all human.

But when someone arrives at work at 9.02 everyday, what does that tell you about them?

When I worked for others and started at 9.00 I would have considered myself late if I arrived after 8.45.

Tis the yoooof of today....lazy little w4nkers.
I'm back working on my own this year , 4 lads I had to get rid over the course of last year , one lad couldn't even rip a house out...ffs my missis can work harder.
I only need a joey but impossible to get , I'd hate to have to find 'skilled' labour.

It depends what trade it is.
I was in farming and not only would we all work our fingers to the bones i could offen ask them to stay late or work their day off. Sometimes they would do a 12 hour day with no break and most of the time it was off their own backs. (Thats on top of a standard 60 hours minimum)
We were also a proper team, none of this office bull **** but would literally have each others lives in our hands from time to time.

Im proper foreign and would not touch anything below 10 an hour plus benefits of course.
Time changes and i see a lot proper citizens work for peanuts which are paid by other proper citizens like OP for example.
And im never on time always few minutes late, they are happy if i come to work
