The Porsche is the better driver's car, but the SLK has the vario roof which makes it a better all round car. SLKs are pretty well made and have few faults (unlike their more expensive sister cars ) but make sure to not get a poverty spec model as they are hard to move on.

Get a decent engine and some goodies on it in a good colour and you will probably have a good few years of trouble free motoring and a relatively little depreciation.

That said if it's pose factor you want then the Porsche badge is hard to beat.

PS The S2000 is better than both of them ... just saying

I know, I was just pushing your button

Seriously though have a look at the SLK as it is well engineered and a nice place to be if not the out and out driver's car the Porsche is. Maybe you can get an AMG SLK 55

Always loved small cars with big engines; the SLK 55 is probably the looniest example I can think of!

Is that a one off? The SLK had the normally aspirated version of the AMG 5.5 V8 did it not?

Yep, it was a conversion. Took a bit of doing as the SLK 55 gearbox did not handle the 500 Plus bhp too well.

Yikes!

Would supercharging the existing engine not have been more straightforward?!

Much of a muchness to be honest. The biggest issue was the transmission as I said. Supercharging the standard engine isn't as simple as just bolting on the charger, there is induction and lots of electronics to take care of. It was probably easier to get a donor M113K powered vehicle and pull everything you need from it.

These days he would probably have pout a Weistec charger in there anyway!

I do like people that do loony things to cars.
Probably influenced by Dad's V8 Stag, 400bhp V8 P100 (Cortina shape) pickup and his 280bhp stock looking Mitsi Shogun (only tuned but quite heavily).
Dad's mate (who did the pickup) also converted loads of stuff including a supercharged, nitrous V8 powered Model T Ford hotrod - that was used as an F1 pace car once. And a 911 Turbo engined VW Splitty.
