So true yet so many fail to realise the importance of handling and responsiveness, was having a chat to a bloke with a really nice yank motor running 600+bhp with a shot of NOS for the drag strip, he was a fan of the Impreza and asked what I was running, saw the brakes and thought I had some secrets under the hood, told him about 265bhp and he said yeah but you'd still kill me in the twisties.

at totb this year the track on the saturday was tight and twisty and the gtrs could match the imprezas and evos.
they opened it up on the sunday and it was a totally different story

I struggled to shake a very well driven 106 GTI on a B road in my mk4 R32 Golf (twice the power, much more weight) but an older RS6 Avant couldn't shake me on twisty roads in the same car either - it's all about weight and agility, hence why the Megane Sports are such massive giant killers on a track. Stripped out (usually older) BMWs are even more impressive but clearly not standard.
I do have to be careful out here because all the local boys are into modding because the taxes, insurance etc involved in changing cars means they tend to keep them and mod instead of upgrading, loads of 1.4 civics running 2.0L engines all stripped out on coilies, saxo's and the little pugs are all popular too because of the narrow twisty roads, handling is king out here.

Up against Auto Bianci's and Zastavas a yugo won and was 10 seconds faster than every one else bar a 30yr old ficho (communist block fiat 500) runining a tuned R1 engine.

I've seen loads of Ferraris on the roads around here, never once have I seen one driven quickly. You don't buy that sort of car to rag around in, they're purely for posing. You rag around in old bangers that you won't worry too much about if you shove it backwards in a ditch. You know ... things like clapped out classics, company cars or white vans

My mate had a chavved Nova pull up next to him at that lights. He was in his brand new RS4 and got annihilated! He was so annoyed, he had it supercharged then wrote it off.
I had a brilliant "race" with a new Vantage not long ago. Before anyone laughs, the performance figures are extremely close to my car (in fact my 0-60 is quicker). He drove the wheels off it, I nailed mine; very evenly matched, all in good spirits. Awesome fun.

That's nothing.
I was driving up to north and left the M6 at Sandbach to head towards Macclesfield on some (unfamiliar to me at the time) twisties. It was dark and the roads were heavily tree lined. My missus was asleep in the passenger seat so I was driving "progressively" but smoothly so she could sleep. A dustbin truck pulled out in front of me up ahead. I thought bollocks, but decided not to floor it past him.
It took him a short while but he got up to speed. and when I say got up to speed I mean 60ish+ and he was clearly on a f*cking mission to get somewhere. It was actually all I could do to keep up with him as he knew the road ahead like the back of his hand and all I could see were his tail lights and a vague idea where the road was going from the sat nav. Needless to say the missus woke up wondering what the hell I was playing at and then laughed as we both watched in awe as this massive bin truck was going round tight corners nearly on two wheels and clipping bits of trees and hedges all over the place.
I am glad I didn't overtake because he'd probably have overtaken me
I can claim the moral high ground as I was merely following. Yeah right ..!

Although xline - like you say he knew those roads ( I can imagine you repeating that for a couple of days)

Had a blast against my mates Boxster S back when I had my classic turbo and it just left me around the corners.
The new Boxster looks great imho and probably doesnt feel fast compared to a turbo but is still shifting regardless.
My neighbour has a 152k mile 2.7 and has had very little go wrong with it for the age.

I can't comment about the Boxster, as I've got a 996 Carrera 4. But they do share in essence the same engine issue.
And it can be a wallet-melter.
The issues are either bore-score/piston slap (remember the Impreza MY98s?), or IMS meltdown - both require an engine rebuild. Circa £8500 from a reputable engine repairer (such as Hartech). Porsche will gladly sell you a new engine..... that has the same fault.
Poor/bean-counter design resulted in sub-standard implementation of the cooling system.
People will harp on about RMS - but it's just a seal that can go due to poor design/fitting (Fifth Gear waxed lyrical about it - it's not a major problem)
That said, the failure rates are relatively low, and only affect all engines BUT the Turbo and the GT range.
Later 997 mk2 engines (inc later Boxster 987) were more reliable, and of course, the new 991 range.
The only other things that can go "wrong" due to wear and tear, are suspension items. Can be quite expensive to replace.
The 996 (despite being had for circa £10k) can bite you financially. Remember - they're a £75k car. With £75k running costs.
FWIW, with the bad weather last year, and feckin potholes), I went through £1200 of rear tyres!
My servicing is quite good. Minor service every other year about £300. Major service every other year about £550 ish.
The Boxster is a great car. And I nearly had one, but for the requirement of the back seats, I went 911.
