maybe you could answer whether or not you run the risk of the camera going against you. For example, you get the discount for having the camera and unfortunately you have a accident that could be seen as your fault, or to be blunt, it was, would it be a requirement of the policy to hand over the footage?

Hi,

If you are getting a discount for having a camera fitted you would more than likely be expected to share any footage relating to an accident with your insurer if they requested it, however, at present our policies don’t specifically endorse for this fact. The whole purpose of the insurer giving a discount though is so it makes it easier for them to settle whether the incident is either fault or non fault. You obviously can’t expect a camera just to be used to decide a non fault accident etc. I would imagine that the Police would also be able to request any footage they deem necessary much in the same way as mobile phone information depending on the severity of the incident.

So basically, yes, if you tell your insurers that you have a dash cam, they are more than likely going to request for the footage.... and if you refuse to show the footage then that doesn't look very good on your side does it? The 3rd party insurers could then build up a stronger case saying that "Mr. Smith didn't show his camera footage therefore what has he got to hide?"

Hi Dan, just to add to your ever increasing questions, if you have a camera but it is not recognised by your insurer ie no discount or not declared, would it still be accepted as evidence in the event of a accident?

Why would you hold footage back though? Either you're defending your case to show the third party is at fault, or if the accident is your fault - wouldn't you admit it anyway?

Hi Allan, good question. I would assume if there is a fault then a recovery attempt would be made. Failing that there's obviously not a lot that can be done. As I've said though the policies we discount for don't currently endorse that the footage is provided - whether or not the Police would require anything else is another case.

Hi, Obviously any footage is better than nothing, in the same way people often take photographs on a camera phone at the scene of an accident - Anything that can help back up the case is worthy of having.

Probably because without the evidence you may get a 50/50 which is a bit better than a full at fault.

Like you say, a picture of a camera phone can be used so why not any dash cam. It's obvious now I think about it, maybe next time I'll think first ask questions later.
