No, it won't ever happen.
Just as rugby will rarely be played as much as football is in state schools.

You need a lot more time to teach rugby in a safe and correct manner, and that's just what state schools don't have sadly.

Actually, reading that link again, it doesn't mention parental input much.
It can't all be down to the schools - parents need to help.

My son loves rugby but he's at a (academically very good) state primary school. They don't do rugby bar a few odd lessons of tag - football is the main sport as it's easy to teach (and I don't mean that disrespectfully to soccer coaches).
Therefore he has to play at our local club on Sundays where I also coach.
80% of the kids in the junior section are in the same situation as he is and many of the parents help out, spend their own time and expense of getting coaching badges, transport the kids to matches and hold down a full time job.

My daughter also goes to a good state Academy and started rowing over a year ago at 11 years old. Again, almost all the juniors at her club go to state schools.
She's become very accomplished but obviously they don't row at school bar a few sessions now and then on the ergo's.

This involves us as parents taking her to 3 training sessions per week - Wednesday and Thursday evenings for which I leave work early, and Sunday mornings.
Throw in the races which can be 2hr drives away at the weekends then again, the parents need to commit.

So, state pupils really aren't being denied competition completely - I think that view is a little short sighted, but I also agree that state schools should be able to introduce 'winners' and 'losers'.

We just can't keep blaming schools for everything.

That a pretty accurate picture, the basic fact is that behind every successful sportsman/women are pretty committed parents - often driving the length and breadth of the country ferrying their children to competitions etc

And that's in addition the the week in week out training sessions (all outside school)

I have children who play/do, tennis, squash, swimming, horse riding, football, athletics, and dance

And it is a challenge sometimes

At moments like this, I always look back with great fondness on the considered and thought provoking words, spoken on most Monday mornings, of one Jack Fawkes, the cleaner who worked in the fitting and machine shop area of the place where I did my apprenticeship.

On hearing the discussion about the results of the previous Saturday's matches, he used to say:

"One nil, two nil. Shut up about the f ucking football".

Still as pertinent today as it ever was, I think.

i hear on the tv some sports commentator,saying i think England have got better over the years. yea right we lost again,and gave another poor performance.

In all fairness the media and all the rest have been quite well behaved this time around regarding the build up and general bullsh1t that normally comes with Engurland, it's you lot your self's (supporters) that's just as guilty as them.

My lad went to a state comprehensive and had a go at the rugby and played at a local club kids Sunday morning session as well. In fact he didn't like the rugby too much and preferred soccer.

There was lad a bit older than my boy who played in the school team He was quite good - oh and his name, Billy Twelvetrees

I think much of the problem is once every 2/4 years during the players time off(holidaying months) they enter a couple tournaments, World Cup and the euros... They are not paid for said tournaments, they have just had long seasons and they can't really be arsed, no commitment, no passion, no pay = home early! more time off to buy ferrari's go wag shopping, do silly shampoo commercials and holiday holiday holiday.

You're missing the point completely you can make all the excuses you like.

This is the problem you don't understand that you're team and players are sh1te, at the end of the day they are not good enough.

It's not because they aren't committed enough aren't paid or what ever, it's because you lot build them up and put them in a position they can only fail in, then blame someone or something like the weather, travel, hotel, referees when they do, you need to realise your only a half decent team and not world beaters.

I think some of the supporters have become fed up with England over the years.
We should just cut the bullsh1t,and admit,we have no world class players,and we just not good enough to win.
then maybe can re build a team and be good,stop hyping up players like rooney,becuase he ain't world class.never has been.but that's just my point.one player i always thought was a good player and probably could of gone on to be great,if it wasn't for all the injuries was Owen.

I suspect a sizeable minority (maybe even a majority) would rather their club win the premiership and champions league than the national team won the World Cup

Doing some stuff so I've put the telly on with that. Argentina Vs Iran is a funny one. Every two minutes they fall all over and all their penalty shoots seem to be a complete waste until now. What's quite surprising is that they are doing less drama when they fall off a wrapleg or by a push. Only one drama I've seen until now by number 23 Iranian but he got up in a few secs to normality.

Why do football players do that? I've often seen that they fall and roll about in agony as if they're severely injured. Some even have the paramedics out. But most times they get up after a whinge and resume the game to run about like nothing has happened. I reckon they fake tbh. I'm not saying that they don't get hurt, but I think they just do OTT acting for sympathy.

Also, I thought the commentators were calling the game messy because they're falling over one another a lot. I've just realised there's an Argentinian player called Messi in the game LOL. Also, there's a long haired Iranian player who kick-passed the ball to his team member even when he was flat on his @rse. Good fighting spirit, that.

I suspect there are a lot of people like me who have virtually lost all interest in the World Cup now that we are out. The hype was way too much before and just sounds silly now. dl

Well I've quite enjoyed the last of this match that I got to watch. I'm sorry that England is out, but with no real passion specifically for football or any high hope from England football team, I'm able to just enjoy good matches on TV when I can afford to. Mr. Messi eventually scored a goal after 90 mins of Iranian resistance, and Arg have won it. The crowd went mental! Great atmosphere there!

Now the panel peeps are saying how fantastic Messi is, but imo he missed many scoring opportunities in this match. If he had failed to secure that one goal, they would have been on his case and replayed his wrongdoings again and again.

Iranian goalkeeper was excellent!

I'd kinda lost interest before it started really in anticipation of being tragically let down yet again and it has come pass as if I were some sort of modern Nostradamus!

Nostradamus? : Does he play for Brazil? Got the right kind of name...

Do we actually HAVE to enter it tho? Does somebody make us? Why don't we just not sign up to the next one? That way we could all save ourselves some angst and build-up tension and the cynics and naysayers wouldn't have anything to moan about - sounds like an ideal plan really...

We could concentrate on getting good and then enter a team when we thought we were up to it.


I suppose the alternative is to get FIFA to follow the example of our schools and make it non-competitive and give everybody a World Cup for participating

England have always had one player who the press have hyped as been going to "do it for England".

All have done nothing. Gascoigne, Hoddle, Owen, Rooney...nothing.

Hodoo, because he speaks like that, now gets to be a pundit...despite his massive faux pas in saying that disabled people were born that way because of doing something bad in previous lives.

Gazza, for all his faults, was actually a world class player, unlike the rest you mention.

One player alone usually can't win a World Cup. Maradona did for the Argies in 86 though.
