The slaughter of Halal meat is called Zabihah and there is certain guidelines.

Allah's name must be pronounced during slaughter.

The instrument must be very sharp.

The animal MUST NOT BE UNCONSCIOUS (so it dies by choking to death on its own blood while in a lot of pain)

The animal must be hung so the blood drains,eating blood is not Halal.

These steps must be done by a Muslim.

The animal must of been fed a natural diet.

Even if you don't eat meat you will still be using animal by-products, there is thousands of uses. You car/cleaning products for you car/beauty products/clothes/computers/and so on,have a look for your self for the facts(I may be a bit out).

The British veterinary association recommends these practices be stopped. To say that we are killing these animals anyway so it doesn't matter how is just wrong. Why should an animal go through pain for no reason?.

A lot of this Halal meat comes from abroad to meet demand,so for a lot of the time the animal is not treated very well and probably has a very bad life.

Killing an animal while its still alive has not got anything to do with there god ,its just that back in the day the only way they knew to drain the blood was to keep the animal alive so the hart would still be beating and pump the blood out. This is just out dated,we can achieve the same results by stunning the animal first. If they had this technology at the time then they would be doing it today. Its seems obvious to me that some have a problem with applying common sence to religion.

We can not ignore the fact that we need animals to maintain our way of life. If we stopped use animal products of any kind it would take us back to the stone age. Even then we would need them to plant are crops and would die young because we could not supplement our diet for lack of protein. We would probably need to kill the odd one for leather ie clothing. There would be to much demand to rely on natural deaths.

IMO its not to much to ask to make it as pain free as possible ,and make sure they have the best life possible. Its not a perfect world but a real world.

Also IMO in the same way that we get full of rage because we get Halal meat on our high streets,Muslims/Islamics or who ever would have 10 times more if we banned it. Ever terrorist training camp in the world would fill to bursting point. We have to live with it because banning it would just be fuel for terrorism.

Hate to say it but unless the animal has its lungs in its head, cutting the throat of an animal and hanging it won't cause it to choke to death on its own blood. it's also worth noting that cutting the throat and hanging upside down is one the quickest way to make something bleed out.

Also if the knife is extremely sharp then the process of cutting the throat won't be particularly painful but that's probably beside the point.

 

Islam can evolve, it has done it recently in Syria after a Cat Halal fatwa. I'm sure in the conception of Islam any form of animal killing would be classed as slaughter.

Having watched some of these slaughter house videos it seems the only real difference between Halal and Non Halal is the 'prayer' bit.

Issues like this Subway fiasco always tend to have a unintended side question. For me it is what the F**K are we eating! Meat is very cheap at the moment (in the grand scheme of things). Chicken especially. Two legs of chicken and chips for a pound fifty where i am. For something to be so cheap corners must be cut. These corners will always be the quality of the meat itself and also at the grass roots level the animals welfare. For animal cruelty to stop and for those in the meat industry to seriously look into animal welfare we the consumer must start paying a lot more for our meat. If we are prepared to pay extra for meat that is certified 'humane' ie no battery farming, free to roam, etc, etc then maybe the guys on the ground doing all the slaughtering or their management will have time to consider such criteria... i don't know the answer but the industry itself seems to need a shake up at some stage.
