The reason I ask is that I was led to believe that UK SUL only goes as high as 97 RON and after going to the local BP I noticed they are advertising their SUL as 98 RON.

98 RON stickers all over the pump. It may be psycological but my car (STi 3) seems to pull better with BP's SUL than it does with say Sainsburys.

Have to agree with DogDogman

My WRX has better throttle response with BP SUL. I rate Esso just behind.

BP may well be better than Sainsbury's, but CK1 definitely prefers Esso SUL to BP. Haven't got the foggiest why, as they're deffo all 97ron. Must be the different things they put in I spose.

Esso every time and Esso Ultron synthetic oil
best choice by far

Surely if it says 98 RON and it isn't trading standards need to be involved!!!

And it's not just a case of them leaving the old labels on. The LFE MWSA had a re-vamp recently including new forcourts and pumps. These all now show 98RON for SUL. The old ones had 97RON..

Does the relevent BS code specify 97 RON or a MINIMUM of 97 RON?

Higher octane levels might be possible. Given that SUL is the base for LRP I very much doubt it though...

Cheers,

Alex

'Scuse my ignorance but what's LFE and MWSA???

My Scooby seems to like Shell SUL & Esso SUL equally above BP SUL which is above everything else .... Total SUL seems to be no better than NUL

Why is SUL and LRP 97 RON in the UK when it is 98 all over the rest of the EEC?

Thumbs down

Well James, according to a BP customer service guy when I called and asked that very question (without mentioning the europe bit) he said "Its because of new european legislation"

when I pointed out that SUL is 98 in most of europe, he came over all quiet and bashfull and promised to get back to me. 6 months later and no reply yet.

Kind of off at a tangent, but why is LRP so much cheaper than SUL in all garages I ever visit?

Guys Guys Guys....

This was done to death when we had the changeover and 4 star was withdrawn. SUL in this country DESPITE any labelling is 97 Ron Minimum. Some of it may be slightly more some of it may be slightly less. It will depend on the refinery and the type of delivery etc. 100 Ron can be purchased from some race circuits but at a premium.

KRIS,

you have lost me here! If UK 97 RON fuel is *minimum*, how can some be slightly less?

..... 97 Ron minimum is the official line but in practice it varies. If you want to be sure then its octane booster time !!!!
