When I went to the Nurburgring I got talking to a Porsche who was running some road legal Dunlop race tyres??
He said they were good for track days (no roll) and that Pete Croney used them too.
Anyone know what they are?

And when you've spoken to Pete, please post his comments here.
Maybe you're referring to new Dunlops launched at the Jan '02 Autosport show. These are road-legal track-day tyres, and Dunlop recommend them for Imprezas. 215/45ZR17 DO1J £152.75 inc VAT.
Best regards,
Richard.

Pete was running 225/40x18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. They come with about 4mm tread depth moulded in. Basically a road legal track tyre. Approx £200 per corner though.....
Also good are the Pirelli equivalent.

I've just been going through the same exercise:
The Michelin Cup's are available in a suitable size (according to Demon Tweaks) but are £199+VAT
Avon do a competition tyre which is close try the guys at http://www.bmtr.co.uk.
There are various Rally style tyres see http://www.ears.co.uk/
Yokohama supposeidly do two tyres the A006-T (tarmac rally @ £120 from EARS) and the A039R (not confirmed).
The last but not least is the Kuhmo Ecsta V700 @ £131 talk to Xpedia http://www.xpediatyre.co.uk and see http://www.kumhomotorsports.com/products/
If anyone knows of any other options please let me know.
Cheers ... Andy

If you want track day tyres you can get a road legal moulded slickin 205/50/16 for £50 a corner in different compounds, no good for the wet but least you can nip out to fill up at a garage instead of being ripped off trackside.

Demon Tweeks list 'em, but if recent experience is anything to go by ring 'em up, don't just go as they don't always stock like the catalogue leads you to believe, fool me.
Oh Maxsport are the cheap ones.

Sorry, it was 'Colway do cheap slicks in addition to Maxsport'. But you seem to have found out they don't do 17" either
Could you not source some worn-out (1-2mm tread) tyres from a tyre shop? I have some trackday rims that have extremely worn-out Bridgestones on (vague lines where the tread used to be) and they exhibited almost no wear after a day gooning around on an abrasive airfield surface (because there's no block shift).

Carl,
I too have a spare set of rim's that i have old (almost slick ) Bridgestones on. And as you say it's fairly easy to get hold of part worns\road illegal standard tyres. This is fine to a point but the tyres go off fairly quickly. This is fine if i'm at a day with a open pitlane but they don't last a 20 minute session.
What i want is more grip that won't go off so quickly.
Cheers ... Andy
BTW - Why does everyone have to do sessions ? Open pit lane is so much better, kinder on the hardware (tyres brakes etc) and so much better on the software (my brain fades after 10-15 hard driving)

Another supplier:
Redpath tyres in the scotish borders can supply Dunlop DA1J's in 215/45-17. The only downside is the price @ £150+VAT and carrage.
