17" Wheels Rubbing on Classic
Hi guys, hope everybody's well Right.....I have just got some Tecnocast Corsia wheels off ebay with 215/45/17 tyres......
The guy who was selling them had them on a classic impreza originally so it just didn't even enter my head that there would be a problem with fitting them. So anyway, I get them and I try and fit them and they won't clear my calipers on the front?! I'm guessing because mine are the 4 pot and his probably weren't? His was an older car than mine, mine is a MY00. So yeah, I ordered some 5mm spacers which came today and now they juusssttt clear the calipers, the wheels 'stick out' exactly how much I'd like them to.....but the rears rub when cornering or going over bumps when there's people in the back It seems okay when it's just me in the car. I didn't think rubbing was a problem with 17" wheels on a classic? Here's another angle to give you an idea of how much they 'stick out'.......
So yeah, as far as I can gather, I have 3 options.......
1. Remove the 5mm spacers from the rears as I don't actually need them to clear anything, I only put them on to match the fronts. Would it matter that the rear track would then be 10mm narrower overall than the front? I don't even know if putting the wheels 5mm further in will solve anything, it's just a guess.
2. Fit the correct size tyres. As I understand it, 215/40/17 is the recommended size for 17's on a classic, whereas there are 215/45/17 on them at the moment.
3. Get a set of coilovers.
4. Get my arches rolled (I don't actually know what that means).
5. Do all of the above
Any help would be greatly apprectiated. Cheers guys

Will the ET be marked on them anywhere so I can check? I just assumed because they came off a classic Impreza, they would go onto another one without any issues. Doh. Another thing though - the wheels without any spacers would not even clear my front calipers, so if they are the wrong offset like you say, and so they stick out too much, then if I'd have got the correct offset they would have been even worse on the front calipers? Or do some wheel designs just not fit over 4-pots?

I looked at my wheels and they stick out as much as yours!

The ET should be marked on the inside of the wheel.

First off, the MY00 cars had four-pot brakes a standard, they actually came in on the 99 onwards cars.
And their wheels were only 16" which DID clear those brakes.
So you probably have wheels with the wrong ET
To give you an example, my classic runs WRX 17" wheels off an 04 car. They clear STi Brembos at the rear and slightly smaller than stock Brembos, called Gran Sport, with 335mm discs at the front.
I'd change the wheels....., but that's me, I don't like spacers,and I HATE little brakes.
And yes, mine runs on 215/40 17" tyres.

Well that's the thing, the only reason I moved up to 17" wheels is so I could eventually get brembos or something similar. But if I can onnllyyy just clear my standard 4 pot calipers now, then I'm gonna run into problems again when I come to upgrade the brakes surely? Hmmph

I got a 2000 sti and that comes with 16s standard an cleared 4pots no bother. As been said it will be wrong et as you shouldn't need the spacers. I have been too can get brembos under mine only just mind

215 45 17 tyres do suit a classic WITH the right wheel
My speedlines are ET48 and i use 45 tyres with no rubbing at all on lowered showa shocks/suspeniosn,but the shocks are set to their hardest so there isnt alot of travel.
when i used 40 on my classic i hated them,far too thin a tyre and it sat lower so my mudflaps scrapped the road over speedbump/leaving my drive.
id say get a different wheel

Right guys, have just had the two rear wheels off to get rid of the 5mm spacers. While they were off I looked to see if I could find out what offset they are. Well I don't know what I'm looking for so I don't know if any of this tells you anything......
And this is what the car now looks like without the 5mm spacers on at the rear........
Have just been out on my own and did a few hard corners and no rubbing Haven't had anyone in the back yet tho so will update on that tomorrow

Tbh if your getting rubbing then I'd say your suspension is tired.
As mine looks a tiny tiny bit lower than yours, and using 215/40r17 and no rubbage at all, and your rims look to come out as far as mine.

I think you could be right mate. One of my friends commented a while ago that the back of my car seemed very 'bouncy' and I might have a shock or something gone, but I never really thought anything of it because the majority of the time with just me in the car it seems okay. Are you running standard suspension then, or not because you said yours looks lower?

The only rubbing I get is my mud flaps on the floor when I've 3 in the back.
Heres mine.
This one is just after I re-fitted the wheels so it hasn`t settled back down in the pic.
This one is better.
Worth getting your suspension looked at, I managed to pick mine up for £100 2 years ago, which was nice. As when I bought my car it looked as if it were a speedboat, up at the front slammed at the back.

Just to update, taking the 5mm spacers off the rear wheels seems to have pretty much solved it! There is some very slight rubbing with 3 people in the back when going round a roundabout, but that is the only time I noticed it. So I reckon if I put the correct tyres on (40 profile instead of 45) and sort my suspension out then that'll be job done

What is the right et? As I had speed line on my classic 215 45 17 tyres and all was fine fitted some 17" rays off a 2003 wrx put standard springs on with my kyb agx shocks and 205 45 17 tyres and still get rubbing even with just me in on cornering I really don't want get rid of my new wheels but looks like I will have to!
I had 18" on my old classic and even with 3 in the back no rubbing so what's going on ??

The correct ET is from 48 to 53, BUT, it depends on the wheel.
Speedlines are o.k at this ET, but other wheels can rub or wont clear 4 pots etc.
some 17" wheels are o.k at an ET of 43 for example as the spoke design doesnt fowl the calipers
it really is hit and miss with wheels, but, if you stick to the desired makes/speedline, prodrive wheels etc you should be fine at ET48-53
