Default Winter tyre size for Impreza

Can I replace 205/50 with 205/55 tyres on a 2006 Impreza Sport automatic with 16 inch rims?

Its not really ideal, can you not find any tyres in that size?

Many thanks. The reason for my query is that I'm considering buying winter tyres (I live in Scotland) and 205/55 tyres are very much less expensive than 205/50s. I wondered if the higher (by 2cm) tyres could be dangerous, for example by not being accommodated safely in the wheel arch; or whether they might have a bad effect on the differentials, etc.

You can but you need to change all the tyres. 50s are quite rare when comparing them to other sizes hence the price increase.

Many thanks. Yes, I was intending to change all four. The price difference is quite alarming: about 60% more.

Thanks for the reassurance from classicgc8. The cheapest 205/55 16" I can find here are from Costco at £98 each (Bridgestones); next is KwikFit at £124 each for Continentals. 205/50s Bridgestones are £160 each from another outlet. Os

BTTT. Is it best to run 215/45/17 or 205/50/17? Have to be 17s as this is the size of my winter rims.

My Nokians were about half that price last year.

I think prices have gone up; same for batteries. Most recent reviews say Goodyear Utragrip 8s are the best (at least, they win awards in Germany!). I bought them from LoveTyres for £94 each. Excellent next day service. They'll be tested soon: a lot of snow coming into Scotland over the next few days. Os

There has to be a cheaper place you guys are paying way toooooooooooo much for tyres. Someone did post a link to a site that was very cheap in another topic.
