MY04 Trackday discs & pads advice
I'm driving a 2004 Blobeye WRX upgraded to Brembos with associated 5x100 PCD 17" STi alloys which I needed to clear the calipers. I've ran it for the last 10,000 road miles and 2 track days on standard discs and fast road pads, but on track I'm quite heavy footed and tend to brake late and agressively so they're dying on me. I need a full set of replacement discs and pads that'll give me more bite and less fade on faster tracks like Donnington and Silverstone, so I was thinking that I should be looking for something both drilled and grooved? Pad-wise I've been reading mostly good reports on the latest spec Bluestuff NDX.
I'm a believer in you get what you pay for, but like everyone I also want a bargain. MTEC are offering a front and rear set of drilled/grooved discs on eBay for £199 which is much cheaper than the guy who looks after my Scooby wants to charge, but does cheap mean crap and so should I be steering clear? His prices seem on par with Scooby Clinic who seem to push EBC front and rear discs at £540 with Ferodo DS2500 pads adding a further £266. A set of EBC Bluestuff NDX pads from Aztec come in slightly cheaper than the Ferodos.
Over a decade ago I fitted a 330mm 4-pot upgrade to my Pulsar from Godspeed as a full set were half the price of just AP fronts. The stopping power was amazing compared to the standard brakes, but the discs warped quite quickly which made heavy braking quite uncomfortable when I did my session at Trax at the time, so I don't want to find myself in a similar position after just one track day. However, I like the idea of their latest 2-piece discs as they claim to address this issue, and more than 10 years later they're still trading which is a positive, but they appear to offer only grooved discs which I wonder if they'll offer the upgraded feel and fade resistance I seek?
Advice much appreciated. In short, I need new brakes all round for track use, but I still drive the car to and from the track so they've got to be okay on the road too.
