tyred with the choice!
I run Dunlop SP Winter sport 205 50 17, a good choice where I am, as there were 7 snow months, and with the July temperatures causing the heating to be switched on!
The Vredestein Snowtrac 3 is also a favourite, but noisier!
I did try the 45 profile, but the state of the roads on the passenger side made things a bit scary fighting the steering on the apex of corners, where the best potholes are found!
Have you thought about Ebay for part worn tyres? you need to shop around, but the best sellers do sets of two or four with no repairs and 5+mm of tread for great prices on the top makes, also you get pictures to get a look at the tread patterns.
You can also find some great deals on sets of four new tyres. Local tyre services will fit them for 10 quid a rim, balanced with new valve fitted round here.

They are snow tyres, and are usually narrower and higher profile, to aid grip in the SNOW !
To the O.P. you could go up to a 225/45/17 for an increase in grip ( more so in the wet ).
A lower profile tyre will have a lower load rating, which is a potential problem with the insurance if you were unlucky.
IMHO.

7 months with snow!
Living in the North of Scotland I can only recommend what works here!
Being dissed by someone who fails to take the car out if there is snow means he gets less annual enjoyment.
Top moment last winter was passing a snowplough that fell into a ditch after taking a bite out of the side of the road and spinning off!
We all have our favourite roads, but when the snow covers them, it is a matter of surviving the conditions. One of the reasons that first drew the Subaru to my attention was the battered square forerunner of the Legacy that bombed down the dual carriageway into Aberdeen, past the creeping traffic in the early 1990's.
If you want to enjoy driving all year round in Germany you have to run two sets of tyres or the all weather ones that comply with the winter tyre legislation. Supposedly, after the debacle last winter with the Glasgow to Edinburgh mororway closed, the Scottish parliament are wanting to bring in winter tyres. Initially for goods vehicles.

Agreed with snow tyres, elsewhere is snow tyres mandatory in winter,if you don't have your insurance is voided or you will be disqualified for dangerous driving.
I was run here last winter with All weather tyres, but what i know, this winter,we are going for winter tyres, just for peace of mind and safety reason.
