Question

I know this one has been posted a million times but I did a track day today and after a few laps the brakes were smoking and the pedal was sinking like a ship/ thinking of doing a few trackdays this year but I dont want to spend AP money.

Run 16" wheels on track days.....

Richard..................

Keep your eyes open for comments on the Godspeed kits.
Your best bet is to go up to 17" wheels and fit the 335mm disk + bell upgrade and use your std calipers.

IMHO the most cost effective brake upgrade (though I haven't fitted them yet, So watch this space)

Plenty of good comments about the Godspeed of late.

Alternatively, I've got the TSL discs and DS2500 pads on my MY99. Well chuffed with them at present.

Chris.

Agree with Dyney - go Godspeed. But mushy pedal is boiled fluid and is always a risk with steel calipers on a tough circuit. Alloy is much better as well as being much lighter.

The best fluid is AP Lockheed Ultra - I'm sure ScoobyMania stock it. It's DOT 5.1 but with a high boiling point and low compressability (according to Pete Croney who's not often wrong).

Some racing fluids have higher boiling points but are usually DOT 3 which means they absorb moisture and have to be replaced regularly. Be careful with race fluids as some of them must NOT be mixed.

Richard.

PS The DOT-rating is a measure of moisture absorbancy, not a heat rating as some peeps seem to think. Sorry if you knew that

How much more info do you need, either on here or some related threads around right now?

From what you've said, 16in Godspeed conversion with alloy bells will give you vastly improved braking and I think he gives a warp-free guarantee for 12 months.

If you can afford 17in wheels as well, the bigger Godspeed kit is even better.

Ultimate up-grades are the big APR and Brembo kits with big alloy calipers.

Which circuits are you thinking of visiting? If they include Donington, a favourite with Scoobs, it is the hardest track on brakes in the UK. Talk to Ian Godney, tell him what you want to do and budget, and he'll advise on options. I believe he also sells APR upgrades.

Best regards,

Richard.

When I was researching my brakes, the two fluids that got recommended were the AP Lockheed Ultra that Hoppy mentions and the Sikolene Pro Race which is a DOT 4.

I do remember Pete saying don't worry about it being a DOT 4 though.

Oh, I've upgraded for fast road rather than track use. I had some hairy brake fade moments on the Tour d'Ecosse last November

Richard,

Mine is a UK99 also with 16" wheels.
First I tried the standard brakes with Mintex 1155 pads. This gives slightly better stopping, but importantly less fading (but there is still some). However these pads (and other similar upgrade pads) will rapidly wear/warp the original discs as they are harder/hotter than the OE pads.
I now have HiSpec 310 grooved discs/bells with their Monster 4pot alloy callipers, DS 2500 pads and Goodrige hoses.
This is very well made kit and the stopping is fantastic. They never fade, even on track.
Driven back to back (at Knockhill) with a P1 using Godspeed calipers and 330 discs/bells, IMHO the HiSpec kit was better.

However, I don't think that either set up is bullet proof. If you want to stop a 1200kg car time and again on the limit for 20 laps then anything short of a full race setup is going to develop problems, the most common of which is warping. Having talked to drivers with AP kit, it appears that even this will warp. Others may wish to comment!

I know you said AP are to exspensive but they are the very best and boy they are that
I suppose it depends on cash, but don't comprise safety/quality for a quick fix.

Talking

depends on the price of both!

make sure the discs are good enough, no point in great pads + 4 pots and crappy discs. I put v. hard racing mintex pads on and warped my std discs....
