Default Brakes are very poor

Bought my UK2000 MY00 a couple of days ago and it hadnt been used much by the previous owner recently. He said the brakes would need to be run in/used as they had little feel or effect. They are 2 pot calipers on the front with drilled/grooved disks but they are shockingly bad.

I've done over 300 miles in the car since purchase and noticed no change in their performance so need to think about replacing the disks/pads, can anyone make any recommendations?

Is this a common problem on Impreza's? I always imagined the brakes would be excellent but theyre worse than on my old Mazda (and they were bad!)

I've been told EBC yellowstuff are a good pad to go for, anyone else using them?

Any help is appreciated

HI
Are you sure they are 2 pot calipers , on a year 2000 model they should be 4 pots on the front

if its JDM then it will still have 2pots Ian............

easy to tell as it will have the "subaru" wording down the caliper if 4pot

generally speaking if its been left standing it could be partially seized pads/calipers or could simply be poor quality components??

Get braided lines, 4 pots and nice new fresh break fluid!

That will be the best solution imo

i'll nip out and check in a mo. Its not a JDM car, definately UK and the caliper looks like it has 2 large round pistons (i'm new to this so excuse the numptyness).

I'll take a pic and post it up.

Like Hammie said.

Get 4 pots...difference is huge...or if it is inside your budget range go for brembos

Looking at the shocking condition of the pads/disks i'm not suprised they hardly work.

Can anyone recommend a good value disk/pad combo please?

I got a set of grooved discs and kevlar pads from Ian @ Godspeed and couldn't fault them for road use. So they would be my recommendation on a standard UK car.

But obviously if the pistons in the caliper are seized it wouldn't matter what discs/pads you used they would still be rubbish.

Cheers
Andy

Apparently Godspeed discs are quite popular

I can supply you our grooved front discs with black painted centres , and our kevlar fast road pads for £99.99 a set , P&P is £12.50.

Cheers Ian

HI
The kevlars are probably slightly behind the performance of the yellowstuff pads , but are also a lot cheaper , and will suit 90% of the drivers , if you were a very hard road driver , or did track days , then the kevlars wouldn't be my recomendation.

I can supply you front and rear grooved discs and kevlar pads for £195 inc vat and P&P.

We can also supply you yellowstuff / bluestuff pads as well

We can also supply you seals kits for £15 per caliper , and stainless steel calipers pistons from £10 each

Cheers Ian

I'm a fairly hard road user and do trackdays + the Nurburgring so I'd like good performance on the fronts.

How much would fronts + yellowstuff + rear disks and kevlars be inc postage please? PM me details so I can get them ordered. Thanks

I got serious fade from yellow stuff during hard road use.
Go for Blue Stuff, hardly any difference in price and supposed to be far better.
My mate runs then in his STI with over 400bhp and standard Brembos and he's raving about them.
I'd also advise you go for the same pad front and back so you're not overworking the fronts. Be interesting to see if Ian agrees on that.

Once the pads are out you will be able to see how free moving the pistons are. If they Are siezed then you will have to remove them, emery them up, grease them and replace

It looks like it by the wear pattern on the disc

You can't tell that from the disc They just look unused to me.

My wifes car had seized pistons on both sides and the discs looked fine. The pads on the other hand were wedge shaped

OP, Dont emery the pistons if they're seized, they have seized because the plating has come off them. They'll need replacing.

Trackdays etc I'd recommend Ians discs with the bluestuff pads.....

I see this wear pattern all the time on LCV's normally due to late\heavy braking. (Albeit a different set-up!)

The rust mark round the top of the disc shows the pads dont have entire contact with the disc. Also the wear groove through the middle shows it has had heavy contact, also looking at the rust marks i think it may also be warped surprised there isn't a wobble under heavy braking!

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the discs on backwards? Not that it will be the cause of your problem which is almost definitely seized pistons.
