If you're getting fade, you need some better discs and pads, together with braided hoses and DOT 5 fluid. DBA discs with Ferodo DS2500 pads work a treat

If the pads and discs are worn beyond 50%, you'll get quite a long pedal which is not very confidence inspiring. Otherwise, the pads could be glazed. I've just replaced mine with some discs and kelvar pads from Godspeed brakes - now that they've bedded in, the pedal feel is much better as is the stopping power - plenty for normal road use anyway. Prices are very good too.

DOT 5.1

As well as braided hoses, a brake stopper (see Twenga group buy) helps pedal feel too.

Disc brakes are self adjusting so pedal travel should not increase throughout the life of the pads.
If they're original discs there could be a rust problem on the inner faces thus reducing the contact area. My 03 STi suffered badly from this! There is also the possibility of one or more of the pistons sticking in the caliper (the car should have had a few brake fluid changes by now!) Talking of which, when was the system last bled?

the 4piston Subaru caliper is very common for sticky/seized pistons (particuarly the lower inner) so quite possibly they aren't fully working............a good strip and clean often is all thats required
