Default Brake caliper removal

Hi all

I've been having a bit of a nightmate with my brake caliper. I had a stuck piston and decided to take the caliper off to get a better look at it. Turns out pretty much all the bolts on both calipers (checked the other side too) are completely seized and relatively rounded off. I managed to remove the bottom bolt from the offending caliper. However the top does not want to move.
After checking the piston,I have purchased a new caliper as the two lower pistons were completely seized on it. My worry is that if I take the head off the bolt (accidentally) that i will not be able to remove the caliper at all as the rotor is in the way.
Could anyone advise whether the bolt is threaded in to the mounting bracket as well as the caliper, or whether the thread is only in the caliper. If it is in both then how would I remove the rotor to get access to remove the bolt? If only the caliper is threaded then I dont mind cutting the caliper around the bolt as I have a replacement.

Any help greatly appreciated

As above. I assume you've had some heat on the bolt?

Beat a slightly undersized ring spanner on the bolt head then use a 4 lb club hammer to loosen. May snap the bolt but the caliper will come off and it will still be recoverable with drilling and helicoil. Failing that drill through the bolt head, caliper will still come off with the disc.

Thanks all for the advice, I hammered on a 16mm socket and then managed to loosen the bolt. Surprisingly easily once i had a hold of it.

Glad you're sorted. Sometimes brutality is the only answer.

Good tip mate ! Used the same process on a bolt I was struggling with. Thanks mate.

When remounting use some copper grease on the threads, and don't tighten them like a gorilla.
I have seen people at Kwik-fit type places use a 1" airhammer on them (as the smaller one was in use I guess)

Even better use loctite medium in blue lipstick form from Halfords. Seals the threads from corrosion and comes off easy enough when required and won't come loose until then. Use a torque wrench to tighten properly.

With the ring spanner tip a flat spanner is best as a cranked one or a socket tend to twist off when beaten.
